A little guess the grade, Washington proof.

It's hard to grade from a pic, but what would you grade this one.

    PR68 ?
  • That is a very sharp coin. The cameo on the reverse looks a little weaker than the obverse.

    I'd say 68CAM
  • 67 DCAM
What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?

Aren't the eagle's wings too dark for cameo designation ?

Michael, I'm glad to see you practicing.image

As for the rest of you, obviously more practice is in order. image

There is a mark in the face that would bother me if I were considering buying it. Also a mark behind the eye. Looks like a mark near the base of the eagle's right (our left) wing. Mark in the field below that wing tip too.

There is a strange color change in the area of the upper neck adjacent to the jaw. Could just be shadow but could be haze or other discoloration. Also a strange tiny rectangular mark above the ear--could just be glare but can't tell

Does not look CAM to me.

    Really good hair detail.

Based on the scan could be anything from pr 64 to 68.

Edited to add: Like I said, 68 image. What a lousy photo. Does not even look CAM, especially the reverse, let alone DCAM

Cam or no cam...either way, Nice proof Washington.

    PR68?
  • Too many frost breaks to get the CAM designation. A couple of ticks on the cheek and neck.

    PR68

    Don,

That's either an extremely bad image or the graders were drunk.

Well, I gave the grade away earlier in the thread, so to the late posters, my apologies. The coin is graded PCGS PR68 Dcam. I have been looking at these coins to attempt to determine the degree of latitude PCGS gives 71 proof Washingtons regarding the cam/dcam designation.

    Here is the coin.

DHeath.....Is it just me or is PCGS that loose with the DCAM designation on the 1971-S quarter? That coin doesn't even look like a cameo to me.

    Paul,

I'm not sure. It might be a mechanical error. If you search the TT site, the other 71 Washingtons appear properly imaged and apparently use the same lighting. I was looking at the 71s because I have one that is very nice, and I was trying to see how much market grading goes on with the date.

    DHeath,

If that is a mechanical error, then wouldn't PCGS's coin buy back would be void for the future coin owner?
  • DHeathDHeath Posts: 8,472 ✭✭✭
Yes, it would. I would have been the responsibility of the original submitter to return the coin to PCGS to correct the designation.

  • PCGS doesn't buy back mechanical errors. The most they will do for them is reholder free with you paying the shipping.
