OT -- Who's got this nasty cold/flu?

Okay I know it's off topic, but I'm here @ 4am, wide awake because I'm practically hacking up my lung and I can't get rid of this damn cold/flu. Anyone else got this bug and have any suggestion how to get rid of it. I'm going on a week and it really s*cks!

I am not an internist, but there is presecription antiviral called Tamiflu, which can shorten the duration of the influenza viral infection. I prescribed it for my wife after she got the flu from me two years ago, and her course was much shorter and much less severe than my own.

As always, consult your doctor blah, blah, blah...and please do not sue me...I do not have insurance in your state. image
  • Yes, I have bronchitis and and an ear infection.

Yes, I'm destroying the world by taking anti-biotics.
    Go well.

  • Colorado is having a particularly bad time with the flu this year. Yes, there have been several deaths reported IN CONNECTION with the flu. Investigation is underway to determine if the flu was the CAUSE of death. There is plenty of vaccine this year, in contrast to years past, so get out there and get your shot.
  • I don't have it.

All three of my son's had it (still have the remaining effects). They gave it to their mom. Somehow they never gave it to me. Must be due to the fact I never get flu shots.

  • Just a matter of time...I got the flu shot, but they say the shot isn't for the right strain this year image
That tamiflu stuff...I heard it works well, but I also hear you have to get to the doctor and get the stuff prescribed when you first start feeling any symptoms, or it doesn't kick in.

I don't have it yet. My sisters' family all have in down in San Antonio, TX.

I am planning on getting my flu shot today. Little late, but still better than nothing.
  • I can't figure out where to get flu shot, so I'm not leaving the house until spring.

I rarely get systemic infections but am on my third day of this flu. Don't really have
any suggestions, but I believe the worst of it is behind me and I'll be back to normal
    soon. Perhaps it's wishful thinking.

It hasn't been a particularly bad flu but does make one feel pretty sick and has killed
quite a few. I'm trying to stay far away from those with weak or immature immune
    systems.

BTW, I also haven't had a flu shot, or any type of vaccination, in almost 30 years. All the people I know who seem subject to regular colds and flu have. What does that say?

I got my flu shot, but I heard on NPR this morning an interview with some influenza maven who said that they completely missed the strain that is going to do all the damage this year in cooking up the batch of flu shot gumbo that they are using this year. It seems like Colorado, and states around the Rockies as well as the East Coast, are getting clobbered. Here in LA everybody is always complaining and moaning anyway, but I haven't heard that it is sweeping the town just yet. But, the scary thing is that they are saying that instead of 30,000 dying this year it could be 70,000 and up. And it is hitting hard a month or two BEFORE the season is supposed to start!

Oh yes, to keep this thread here, if you get the flu, why you can't go to any coin shows and there's some good ones coming up!

That says the he is one lucky SOB or has an immune system made from cast iron or is a hermit. For myself I have not had the flu in a long time either. I do get a shot just to be safe.

  • actually, you are close to the truth - we take colloidal silver, as well as mega vitamin c, e, garlic, and lots of others - if you need some vitamins, you can get them from me. VitaminPower Of course I wouldn't want to melt a nice coin, but an old one would work - we use silver strips.

Russ is a wise man. I can't believe how many people take flu shots and take anti-biotics and expect NOT to get those diseases. Think about it: anti means "against" and anti-biotics are indeed bad news for your body, health, and immune system, and they have a cumulative effect. Wake up, people!!!

Neptune and Russ have the ticket. Stay healthy, avoid flu shots & anti-biotics, and take vitamins to boost your immune systems during times of sickness. I do the same things.

This years flu vaccine, now in short supply, did not include protection for the current bad strain. K

MY daughter: 103.5 temp, headaches, two trips to the doctor . . .

On day 3, she is doing better, but low grade fever still, and feels terrible.

I pity anybody who has caught it.

Get a Z Pack prescribed by a Dr. I hear (from my Dad) it is the best thing.....I believe the antibiotic is formally called, and I will spell this incorrectly.....zarythramiacin.....if its viral....this should help....

Normally, I don't take a flu shot but for some reason I took one this year. I take vitamins and echinachea, etc.

Perhaps, it is that fear that I have in looking at the beautiful pictures of my paternal grandmother who died from the flu in 1918 when my Dad was not even 1 year old.

After our flu shot, my wife and I have not been feeling quite right.

I want to add the coloidal silver to our regimin.

I was one of the first to get this nasty stuff this fall (up in Montana). It was horrible and violent. I was alone for the first two days and at one point wondered how I was going to get to the hospital without calling 911. I could barely move, let alone put any water/7-up in me to keep hydrated. Truly the worst influenza I've ever had. After two days of this, it let up and allowed me to drink water, etc., eat soda crackers that I lived on for another two days. Lost weight and looked like hell. Funny thing is that I never pitched much of a fever. The "feeling down" part lasted another 4 or 5 days. Up here, they called it the 9 day flu. It ran its course through my family and each person responded differently. However, it was clearly worse with the adults than the kids.

That you are the infamous "boy in the bubble" ? image

If you don't get sick in the Puget Sound with all the dampness/etc, you are doing good. I didn't get sick very often at all..until I got a kid and he started in daycare image
Instead of show and tell (taking something from home and showing it at daycare) he seems to practice "get sick and take it home to share". image

They have said it is a nasty flu this year.....people like my mother (heavy stress on her) need to take it really easy and should always wipe your hands (she carries dry soap right now since getting this strain of flu could actually kill her in her condition right now) whenever you go out in public and touch things (bathroom doors, railings, evelator buttons, etc).

Take care for those that have it!!!!

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
