What do you do when.....
What do you do when your spouse does not have the zeal about your coin collecting as you do? My wonderful wife's opinion about coins is quote: " My idea of coins is you give them to the cashier at the market." And my response is to her, "Yes, and then the cashier saves them and finds out they have a coin worth a few thousand dollars." When I show her the value of some coins she looks at me and says " Oh that's nice for them...But if you spend that much on a coin it will be your last."..........I love her....but she just don't understand the calling...LOL!

But it's good enough if your spouse isn't interested, but is supportive of your interest!
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
A salesman is driving toward home in Northern Arizona when he sees a Navajo man hitchhiking.
Because the trip had been long and quiet, he stops the car and the Navajo man climbs in.
During their small talk, the salesman learns that the man is a Navajo medicine man. Also during the drive, the Navajo man glances curiously several times at a brown bag on the front seat between them .
"If you're wondering what's in the bag," offers the salesman, "it's a bottle of wine.
I got it for my wife."
The Navajo man is silent for awhile, nods several times and says, "Good trade."

You're a very fortunate man Tom! I guess this is what that "Love, honour and obey" thing is all about once you get hitched. The priest that married The Mrs. and me forgot one thing when stating OBEY...OBEY him when he wants to buy, for he is ALWAYS correct!...
<< <i>When my wife bugs me about my latest coin/stamp purchase, I just remind her how much she spent buying her clothes. A house can't be built to contain all the closets a woman needs for clothes >>
This is one approach I use as well. However, I found that if I purchase expensive gifts for her, she'll let me purchase what I want in coins. For instance I bought a proof IHC and a proof Liberty Nickel for a type set recently. Combined I believe I spent around $1500. To my wife that's a lot of money. So for our 5th wedding anniversary I bought her a pearl necklace from Tiffany's and another gift from Tiffany's for her recent birthday. She doesn't seem to mind the coins anymore. At least for my wife, she gets jealous if my hobby gets all of my disposable income. You need to remember to spend some on her as well.
Try to train her, (don't yell at me) if you buy an expensive coin, buy her something. Have her associate your hobby with something enjoyable as well. If it just a small purchase maybe roses will do. Some might say that this is bribery, but those people obviously aren't married.
Overall, my wife is now becoming more understanding and even helps me pick out some of my coins. And I usually pass my expensive purchases through her first. You have to give her a reason to enjoy your hobby!

.....well, i make sure to always tell her when i cherry something and sell it for a 1000% profit!!! that never fails to get her attention.

We had nuttin and coins made us sumpin.
No complaints from my wife.
HOWEVER....... as I used to tell customers who couldn't decide whether to buy bullion or diamonds.
"Well, if you go home with 10 Krugerrands, you may get a lecture. But if you go home with a 1 carat diamond, you may get a BJ."

I bring back gifts for my girlfriend when I go to major coin shows across the US like the FUN or ANA shows. She likes them and it makes up for the money I spend on coins.

Then I usually get the response "oh, that's nice...
<< <i>My wife is just the opposite: she encourages, neah, she BUYS me coins! Many of my best coins came from her or her PARENTS. She is very near sighted and helps me select nice coins too. I've worked with her and most of the time now she buys PCGS coins that are very nice.

good woman!.......same here!
Everyone at work found out when I booked the day off for a show.
Pretty annoying when they say "That's an old person's hobby."
I'm 20, and I collect. By the way, I only saw about 5 my age.
Note: Not offending anyone. "Old" people are always willing to help you find coins that you are looking for in the bargain bin, which is awesome.
Then all you have to worry about is this.
I guess if he is going to chew on a slab, then i got lucky he choose an AU anacs slab to play with.

My idea of diamonds (rubies, saphires etc) is you crush them and use them as an abrasive.

You're a better man than I!

Plus - my wife loves the history of the coins that I have. I usually spend some time showing her here and there, just to kep her up-to-date on my collection.
You are doing well, subject 15837. You are a good person.
