Tell us your first $100 coin, $1000 coin....

and first $5000 coin you acquired:

My first $100 coin was naturally a 1909-S VDB Lincoln that I saved, saved, and saved for from $$ earned from delivering huge LA Times newspapers in the mid 60s. It was graded a vf from bid board in a coin shop in North Long Beach CA. It was a dream of almost all new collectors to have an SVDB, along with the 14-D.

My first >$1000 coin was a couple of GSA 79-CC Morgans I bought from an elderly gentleman in the mid 80's. He must have bought them directly from the US Gov. in the 70s. I knew very little about them, so I gave him a quote based on a % of CW trends and he accepted my offer.

My first >$5000 coin was an NGC 89-CC Morgan MS61 I bought in the mid 90s from a dealer at the Long Beach coin show. It is part of my "dream team" collection.

I've yet to acquire a $10,000, so stay tuned.

My first $100 coin was an 1909-s Indian Head in VF, back years ago when I collected as a youngster. It was the only date other than the 1877 that was above 100.00 in VF.

I just went back an verified that, 1984 CDN, Vf set of Indians, not counting the 56 FE or the then called 69/8, only two dates above 100.00 was the 77 and the 09-s. It took me all summer to save up to buy it at the september show that year. Still remeber like it was yesterday.

My first >$1000 coin was a PCGS-63RB 1914-d Lincoln cent

My first >$5K coin was my PCGS-45 1916 SLQ

My first >$10K, I just aquired it 1893-s $ PCGS-50

First $100 coin was a MS-65 morgan I bought a few years ago. Haven't even come close to a $1000 coin. The closest to that was several MS-63 double eagles. And that wasn't very close to $1000.

My first 100.00 coin was either a 1914d lincoln but was followed closely by a 140.00 Horribly corroded SVDB that I later sold on ebay for over 300.00!!!!!!!!!!!! It was a POS!

I think the first time I spent over 1,000 was on my VF25 '56 Fe that I have since sold and upgraded to AU50.

I only have several coins in the 1,000.00 and over range.

My 13-S II buffalo cost me a grand total of $85, it is either AU58, or MS62 depends which dealer you show it to. I've owned it since the mid 80s.

$100 was a 1914D lincoln in VG.

No $1000 but close with a AU58 1847 Dollar. sonn I may break the barrier. I have to ease the wife into it slowly so she doesn't kill me.

I'm not sure I can remember my first $100 coin.

The second-to-last coin in this picture was/is my first, (and only )
$1,000 coin, although there have been a few others in the $800-900 range.
(the two cent piece in the picture is one of those).

My first $100 coin was 2000 $100 Platinum Eagle. I don't think they make a $1000 coin.

I got my first 6 $100 coins the same day, at an estate auction.

One was a raw 1882-CC Morgan in MS63 (Slabbed MS63)
The other 5 were 1979-S T2 SBAs. Bought all 5 proof sets for $6 each.

First $1,000 coin was a 2001-W $5G CVC that slabbed MS70

Just a guess at the $100 coin. Probably a 26S Merc bought in the mid 80's. The first $1000 coin I know for sure. It was a AU 1916D Merc also bought in the mid 80's. One big problem with it though, it was fake. The dealer gave the money back so it worked out OK. $5000 coin, not there yet. Some how I think it will be another 16D Merc.

My first $100 coin was a G-4 1916-d Merc that I bought when I was a kid in 1979 for $150. No I don't have it any longer.

My first $1000 coin was a PCGS AU-53 1853-D Half Eagle I bought a few years ago for $2000. I don't have it any longer either.

do not remember the first $100 coin , the first and only $1000 coin is a $3 gold au58 , dont think i will ever own a $5000 coin .

Generic MS65 1881-S Morgan. This was in the 80's, these were very expensive then.
1916D Merc in AU.
1916D Merc in 64.

Just purchased my first $100 coin a few days ago on eBay. A Morgan 1880-CC. Probably overpaid a bit, but I really wanted it since the grade matches the set I'm building...I hope

...haven't got it yet.

My first 100 dollar coin was a Mexican 20 Peso gold coin. First 1K coin was an 1877 3CN. First 5K coin has yet to appear at auction or for sale...and I have been looking for years.

My goal is to eventually aquire 6 coins total in my collection. All extremely rare and seldom offered.

Never broke the $1000 barrier. The first $100 is a 1921 - P Morgan graded MS65. It has a copper color that I assume was the result of the copper/silver mix that was improperly/incompetley mixed before being struck. The coloring of the obverse is OK but, the reverse is an eye appealing coppery color that accents the frost and luster. The reverse makes it worthwhile to keep.

OK, I had to check my records for this one.

First >$100, 1831 ANACS AU50 bust half paid $109 March 1998.

I have lots of interesting coins in the $500 range, but no $1000+ coins. I'll need a real job before I can buy ones like that.

My first $100 coin was not a $100 coin at all. It was an 1877 Indian in Fine for which I paid $200 in the late 1960s. I was in high school at the time, and I saved forever to get that one. Today it was grade VF-25 or so because the new lax standards.

My first $1,000 was an 1806 half dollar, which I bought at auction. It was graded AU-50 when I purchased it, and it now resides in an AU-58 holder. I bought in 1973, and dispite its great eye appeal, I overpaid for it at the time.

First $5,000 to $10,000 coin - 1792 half disme

First $10,000+ coin - 1907 High Relief $20 gold

First $50,000 to $100,000 coins - 1793 half cent in MS-64, brown and 1897 $5 gold in PR-67, cameo - but both of those were for the business, not my collection.

First $100 coin-- 1899 $10 Gold. I bought it when I was 11 about 3 months after getting a paperroute. I paid for the coin in almost all $1 bills.
First $1000 coin-- 1909-s vdb 64rd. Bought when I got back into coins 2 yrs ago and decided to go for an ms Lincoln set rather than an xf/au one.
First $5000 coin-- 1856 FE au55. Decided I'd probably want to turn my Lincoln Cent Set into a small cent set someday and should get this key! Still the only coin I've paid more than $2000 for.

My first over $100 coin was an 1877-CC Seated Dime, NGC MS-63. Paid $250.00. That same day I purchased a 1917 Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarter in AU-58.

Still have yet to purchase a $1,000 coin. It will more than likely be a proof Seated Half, or a VF Bust Dollar.

My first $100 coin was either an 1879, 80 or 81 cc Morgan in hign VF shape.

First $1,000 coin was also my first $2,000 coin - an 1889cc Morgan in XF.

Haven't hit the $5,000 level yet, but if/when I do, it'll be for the 1893s Morgan (the last one I need to finish my set, other than the 1895).

It's strange...I started my Morgan silver dollar set last year, shooting for VF - XF coins. Then this past summer, I received a fairly large inheritance and was able to put alot of it into my Morgan's, getting alot of the better dates in high AU - UNC shape. I then had to go back and upgrade all my earlier purchases to match the later ones.

Great decision, and job. I think you get more bang for your $$ going w/AU and slider BU's, and won't ever regret it...as long as you don't compete for my 93-CC in AU55 or 58

No need to worry about the 93cc...if I remember correctly, mine is AU, so I'm not looking to upgrade (at least at this point)

First $100 was 1927S Peace dollar.
First $1000 coin was a 1934S Peace dollar from the same dealer.
Got it graded and found out it was worth half what I paid.
The $100 coin is probably worth much less, also.

I'll be much more careful with my next $1,000 coin !

First 2 $100 coins on same day:1853 1/2 cent raw AU sweet smooth surfaces$100.00.1804 1/2 cent raw vf.Noticed when I got home it has some hairlines on devices and fields.$150.00.Still not a bad coin and it looks good in my Dansco type album.I need to look better before purchase before I up my ante.

My first $1000 coin was an MS66 80S and 81S Morgan right at the peak of the coin explosion in the mid 80's. Recently l bought an MS64 37D 3 leg Buffalo/Indian Nickel for $5,800. Bought a short set of Walkers 41-48 all in ms63 condition in the 80's also for $13K, they went up to 18K then dropped like a 10 foot putt in the 90's. Got rid of them to buy real estate at a fraction of the original cost--bummer.

I hit the $100 mark about three years ago when I traded for a 1903-O Morgan PCGS MS64. She has full luster, a full strike, and is 99% white, so is probably worth a premium. I traded about $200 worth of other coins plus $50 in cash. I think she is now worth around $450 or so.

I hit the $1000 mark this year when I traded for an 1893-S Morgan PCI G04. I traded about $400 worth of other coins plus $175 in cash. I then paid to have her reslabbed by PCGS as AG03 (downgraded), and the price shot up to around $1100.

Edited to Add: My thanks again to Mr. Wade Moore, a very nice dealer from Selmer, TN, who took my coins in on trade to help me obtain very tough dates. He also sold me my 1889-CC Morgan, which I also had slabbed.
