Paid to much?

Just curious,... paid $8.00 and the dealer graded it VF. Specs are dust and stuff, not on the coin but in the flipit. I like it because it is one of my oldest coins.

    Hi, Rob --

Nice looking Indian Head Cent! $8 seems very reasonable.

i hate to sound like an upset person so much but im dropping my clifton coin shop in search of a much better shop i got a 1863 same year less detail and looks bright copper for $10. i think its been cleaned they said it wasnt. im unhappy now after seeing tis. thats the ONLY one in my area. i hope im not stuck cause of my location in north jersey. i know theyve been aroudn forever but i question what im getting even though they claim its what they grade . but simply it just cant be ethical to sell a 1863 cleaned with no liberty for $10. ok this is going on the if iget a working scanner im gonna do. cause this is not good.

oh by the way to stay on topic . nice coin

I've seen those coppery looking Indians at my local shop, also. I'm pretty sure something was done to them in the past, either cleaning, dipping, or copper polish. Old cents just don't look that way if they haven't been tampered with somehow.

63 is a pretty common date but its in good shape. $8.00 ain't bad. wait until you start buying key IHC than we talk about to much.

Without the dark patch on the reverse, this coin would be worth $20 or so. With it, it's worth at least $10, so you got a good deal.

Technically the coin grades XF-40. Depending on the nature of the reverse spots, you either got a good deal, or at the least a fair price, assuming the reverse discoloration isn't eating the coin. image

    Good catch.

I agree on the XF-40 grade, and that $8.00 was a very fair price, but I would have held out for a nicer coin, one without discoloration. The IHC's from 1859 to 1864 were minted of a nickel-copper alloy, and shouldn't look as brown as yours. Perhaps it's just the scan, though. In 1864 the composition went to bronze, and at that point, brown is a good color. Here's my 1862 - weakly struck, but a nice type coin nonetheless.

The scan is an accurate portrayal of the color. Not sure why it is that brown if it is not supposed to be. Thanks for all the input. Not sure what the discoloration on the back is, but I don't believe it is corrosion.

Hard to lose too much on an $8 purchase. Seems like a fine coin for the price.

Rob: you got a very decent coin there and despite the discoloration, is pleasant to look at.

You can't go wrong with $8 for a genuine 1863 coin. image

Rob - good coin - you have yourself a little piece of the civil war in your collection now - not bad at all for $8!

Enjoy and welcome to the boards! image

It's not too much if you like the coin. That is what really counts.

Rob: I forgot one thing. I have seen sellers charge more just for s&h alone on other coins they sold than what you paid for this nice cent! image

That should certainly make you feel really good.image

    Rob,

You like the coin and only paid $8. Seems like a great deal to me. I always feel that if the coin makes me happy then that's 80% of the 'was it a good deal' battle!

I wonder what the dark stuff is. It looks like it got put down in Jelly 100 years ago.... Perhaps it was in some kids pocket in 1871 along with some melted treat.... :-)
