    NTC stands for Numistrust Corporation.

    Say it out loud: N-U-M-I-S-T-R-U-S-T.

Kind of sounds like New Mistrust, doesn't it? image

And that's an appropriate nickname. They are both new and eminently untrustworthy. I personally would rate them second worst, right there next to Those Whose Name Should Remain Unspoken (you know who).

NTC is one of the branches of the Numismatic Axis of Evil. Their grading is actually worse than ACG or at least just as bad. The other branches of satan's realm are as follows:

    1. ACG
    2. PCI (I was wrong before and fully admit to my mistake)
    3. Littleton
    4. HSN
    5. Coinvault
    6. Truegrade
    7. ACCG
    8. PVC based coin holders

    Brian,

I am growing quite fond of your lists!

    9. NCS (that should stir things up a bit)
    10. Teletrade

    Great list. image

But you spelled "Truegrade" right... which is wrong.

They say "TruGrade" on their labels, which makes them even more nauseating. image

There's one nice thing about NTC. Their slabs are one of the easiest to crackout. They fall apart if you breathe hard on them.

In my opinion, ignore the grade NTC gives, and grade the coin yourself, as if it were raw.
To pay full price for the grade of a coin in NTC slab would be foolish,
but I have gotten many nice coins out of NTC slabs, for example,
Picked up a nice large cent that they had graded AU, I graded it VF, and paid a Fine price.

  • the best part about NTC slabs is that they are so cheap that you can actually find deals in them - GRADE THE COIN. You may get a gem in disguise.

The last two posts have a point- sometimes you can pick up nice coins in crap holders, if your eye is sharp enough, and get a good price because the label scares people off. Watch out, though- coins that are doctored or which have hidden problems (or are even counterfeit!) have a way of sneaking into the slabs of ignorant, bottom-tier "grading services", and the problems don't get noted, either.

I played the game once. Saw a decent looking Seated half in a crappy You-Know-Who holder, graded EF45. I knew it was AU55, easy. Got it, cracked it out, sent it to ANACS, and found I was right- they gave it an AU grade. BUT- they net graded it for cleaning and some light tooling I'd missed. I paid EF40 money for it and they net graded it to EF40, but naturally I lost money when I sold it. I just chalked it up to experience.

You can mine for "unrecognized gems" in bottom-tier holders, but beware. Just make sure you know what you are doing, first.

treat ntc just like any other slab. it's just a temporary holder until you put the coin in your collection.

  • I bought my first NTC coin yesterday. 1911-d- $2.50 in ms62 , coin is lightly cleaned au58 with slight rim damage. I need an AU55 so I'm hoping this will work. I paid a dealer $2000, I'm bidding $7000 for PCGS 62's. John Albaneseimage
