What would you do with this ebay coin buyer? Part 2

A little over a week ago Relayer posted this thread about this buyer receiving a chipped slab wanting a $7 refund. Today I received this email from an ebay buyer.

<< Hi recieved coin today, very nice ! although iam not too happy about a couple of deep scratches on the obverse side of the holder from the staples that surrounded the coin in packaging, rather than return the coin to you for a new holder costing us both, my local coin dealer said he would send it back to pcgs for a new holder with others for 7.00 total, iam requesting a refund in that amount, please advise, Name withheld >>

The slab was in a brown coin envelope which is then wrapped in bubble wrap material which is stapled tight to minimize any movement. Hence, the staples. My feedback indicates that customers find my packaging to exceed the norm. In three years I have probably sent over 150 similar packages with no problems.

Its only $7 and my initial reaction was to send this guy the money but I recalled relayer's post so I thought I would look to see if it was the same person. It is!..........so now I look to the wisdom of the folks here for direction on how I should proceed. I always leave feedback when I receive payment so he has already received a positive. My two thoughts are as follows:

1. Tell him to send the coin back for a refund. He got the coin for a steal so I doubt he will be pleased this option. Being that the holder is "scratched" I, of course, would refund his shipping. My concern though is that he will intentionally inflict scratches to justify his complaint.

2. Tell him to give me his dealer's name & number and I will arrange payment for the reholder service. All he will need to do is hand deliver dealer. If he is scamming me he will have to get the dealer to go along to receive his $7.

What are your thoughts?, other ideas? Your input will be appreciated.

That sounds eerily like the same buyer. I'd just give him the $7, though.

Edit: Oops, just noticed you said it is the same person. Now, I'm wondering if this guy just wants new holders at the seller's expense.

I think that with your method of packaging, the only way to scratch a holder would be to be dumb and scratch it himself while removing the coin without care...

I think he's SOL on this, unless you can think of a way that it could have happened while in transit- was the coin insured?

I wonder how many times this buyer has had sellers refund him $7.00. image

If it truly IS the same buyer, AND he's using the same CON - tell him that you are sorry but you used up the $7 on all of the precautions you took on shipping the coin.

Tell him you are old and on a fixed income but you know some other people he can buy coins from on E-bay that will pay the $7 per slabbed coin bought.

Then name relayers E-bay handle as one and name several other of us board members. See what he says. Maybe he'll try the same thing on us....

This guy has got a scam going. I would contact some other sellers he has bought slabs from to confirm he is doing a scam and then I would contact ebay and have him booted. This sounds like postal fraud to me. mike
Oh yeah whats the guy's ebay name?

Fats, I'd suggest that you keep it simple - call his bluff and offer a refund if he wants to return it. Skip the part about offering to work with a dealer to have it re-holdered.

Maybe even let HIM know that YOU know, he's had the same "problem" before. I realize that would be going against my "keep it simple" recommendation. But, if you feel the urge to jab at him a little, that might be a polite, but enjoyable way to accomplish it. image

Best of luck and keep us posted.

      Edited to add:

I concur with darktone on all counts. image

This guy sounds like a scammer so if you tell him you will pay the dealer he will probably tell you ok and use his neighbor or a friend as the dealer.

If the coin is not that expensive and you can live without the sale for now I would go the refund route but I would not give that refund until I had the coin back in hand and expect the slab to heavily scratched up even if it's not already image But the guy might think twice about doing this again.

Email him a link to relayers thread and then tell him to take a flying leap and bar him from bidding on any of your future auctions.

How about posting a link to your Ebay auction that he won.

I'd like to add him to my non-bidder list, as well.

Personally, I would send him an e-mail linking relayer's thread and this one. Probably would go a long way toward ending the scam, beginning with your transaction.

Was the coin insured? If so tell him you need to file a claim with the USPS. I would then follow darktones suggestion, then block him. Additionally, I would post his ID (or offer to PM anyone who request his ID) so others may choose to block him from bidding. Maybe this individual has had other scams that people know of.

      Just my two cents

Sounds like a forum member judging by something he said in an e-mail response in relayer's thread.
Please give the eBay ID so that I can put one more turd on the bidder block list.

Thanks for the input. It is very interesting because this guy has very nice feedback and has been around for quite awhile. He has purchased from others on this board. Who knows, maybe a fluke situation and it really did get scratched and all the rest is coincindental. Frankly, I'm too old and tired to fight these wars, and too smart to publish this guys name on any open forum. I will send him the $7, get the positive feedback, then let him know what I know.

I will be happy to respond to PM's.
