Seriously, do people who collect sales tax on Ebay

from sales within their own state really report it and pay it to their state? Or is it just a way to make another 7 or 8% on those sales?

  • I know that I bid less if the seller is from Texas because of the sales tax.

Yes I do collect CA State sales tax and I pay it to the state Board. Some day the state Board is going to catch up to those that dont and then the hangings will start.

I don't collect extra for taxes for in-state purchases. However, I do pay the state taxes on all my NC sales at tax time out of the general purchase price.

    Edited to say:

In other words, I do collect the taxes, just not over and above the auction price.
  • I don't sell within my home state because of the sales tax complications. Ain't worth the extra 2% market share.

I always collect sells tax. If I dont collect it, I have to pay it. For some strange reason, I've only had one sell to a collector in Texas since I opened the buisness. Having to collect sales tax has definatly killed my market to Texas residents. Texas residents will just have to figure what they're willing to pay (including the tax) into the bid.

  • Seriously? Sales tax is a real pain. I lose customers from California because of it. In this county I must collect %8.25. I am a real business and pay Sales as well as Social Security and Income tax. Most of my customers are from out of state and I attribute that to the tax.

Sales tax IS a big pain.

If you don't state that you are going to collect it from your own state, you can get in trouble. If you collect it and DON't pay it to the state, you can end up in the slammer.

Sales taxes and the Internet continue to be a problem. Some greedy states would like to organize a national sales tax collection agency to enforce the laws for ALL SALES. If they do that it would put a big crimp in the Internet economy.

My understanding is that if you don't collect the tax, you can get into a small amount of trouble. If you collect it and don't hand it over to the state, you can get into big trouble. So I think anyone who is collecting it, is sending it in to the state.

I always assumed only dealers had to charge sales tax when they sell on eBay. I hate it when I see sales tax on auctions. It is for this reason I never buy from heritage, especially when there is a juice to pay (double whammy). I sure hope they don't make all online transactions taxable. Mine as well tax my garage sell while their at it if they do that.

  • All that has to happen is a buyer reports the purchase on his or her taxes, if the seller didnt pay the tax they collected, THEIR UP SH*T CREEK WITHOUT A PADDLE!

  • I never buy within my state just to save the extra money on my purchase....How honest they are w/ the tax collector who knows.
