conder101: New Slab Variety?? ACCGS

New Slab Variety on eBay

I did not find this variety in your book, but maybe I just missed it. Any comments or information?

  • American Coin Club Grading Service? As best I can make out on the back.
    Curmudgeon in waiting!
  • The reverse says American Coin Club Grading Service, Official grading service of the Beverly Hills Coin Club. 9899 Santa Monica #151 Beverly Hills, CA 90210 www.accgs.com,

  • This is a new slab. The book came out in April/May, and there is no way this type would have been in it since ACCGS wasn't "founded" until June 2003.

That is a pretty good idea to grade each side instead of a net grade of the whole coin!

As Cameron said this slab came out after the book was published. I first learned of it about two weeks ago but the link you provided has given me the best pictures of one that I have seen so far.

There have been a fair number of additions since the book was published. Around 9 new companies have been added (plus two or three pseudo-companies to the miscellaneous section), around 11 new production varieties, maybe a dozen new sample slabs, and two new presentation slabs. Keep the new finds coming folks! And thanks.
  • The coin looks funny to me.Like it could have been a piece of jewlry.
12:00 on the obverse 6:00 reverse.
  • I like the auction description: "1805 5 Berries Dime, EF-40, 2nd finest known."

Okay, I looked at 3 uncirculated 1805 Dimes at the ANA, including an MS-64 at Gary Adkin's table that was stunning. Also, we have owned several 5 Berries 1805 Dimes in the EF range. So, either the seller is really saying that this is the 2 finest known in his collection or inventory, or he needs a cup of coffee. He also states that PCGS only reports that 1 1805 5 Berries Dime has ever been graded by PCGS in all grades. That sounds ludicrous to me. Anybody know how to check that claim? I think that the 5 berries 1805 has been way over rated for years.
  • After looking at it..I have to agree..it DOES look like it was attached to a loop or something at one time.
  • PCGS has graded 5, with the highest being MS62 and there are 2 at that grade.

Not all of the major services but some of the services did. ANACS, the first service graded both sides seperately until late in 1989. From very late in 1986 through the end of the cetificates eachcoin was grade by four graders and EACH graders opinion of both the obverse and the reverse appears on the certificate. The final grades are rounded average of those grades. Each coin was also rated as to Luster, surface quality, eye appeal, and strike quality. Today you get one number with no explainations.
