E-bay scam on 1911 D $2 1/2-----PCGS NOT

This guy changed his ad to say the coin had been cracked out of a PCGS holder.... With all of the negatives, I doubt it. Then, he has 7 negs in one week.

Item number: 3038982225

Beware!

BTW, isn't a 98% positive feedback rating required to be a Power Screwer?

I think you should see this:

    11-D HALF EAGLE

Now look at the auction AbesNeighbor pointed out. The slabbed pictured in the original post is a HALF EAGLE picture taken from the above auction. I recognized it immediately because I was intested in the half eagle auction...

Look at the coin near the bottom. It says FIVE DOLLARS. Amazing what people will do...

I was SO surprised when I saw this $2.5 dollar auction you posted. I said "hell...I've seen that coin before..." Just last night, in fact. lol

BTW, look at the raw photo of the obverse there is die breakage in the stars behind the head. On the slabbed one there clearly isn't any die breakage. Of course, this ignores the fact it's NOT even the same denomination. image

I fired off this eMail to him:

<< <i>The picture of the PCGS coin you have in this auction was taken from this auction:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3038450480

It is a $5 coin, not a $2 1/2. You are a liar, a thief and a fraud. Your scam has been reported to eBay. I'd suggest you shut down this aution now before they do it for you. Fair warning...Russ >>

Maybe he'll cancel before somebody gets royally screwed.

    Yeah, and maybe not. image

I notified the seller of the $5 his pic is being used by another....

    Private auction: strike one
Describes coin as cracked out, but shows picture in a slab: strike two
    Terrible feedback: strike three

    Next batter.

Well, he does state that you will be getting the coin pictured, and with all his negs I would have to believe that "the coin pictured" is the uncertified one that looks to me to be counterfeit.

Nowhere in his auction description does he state that the picture of the slabbed coin is the same coin that you will receive, it is apparently included in an effort to decieve, in my opinion. As a matter of fact, he states, "See picture for EXAMPLE"(emphasis added).

If you know how to decipher his description, you would be wise to avoid his auctions.

    Jim

Edited to add: The fact that almost all of his auctions are "Private Auctions" is a huge RED FLAG in itself.

This seller also sells Morgans. I once contacted a buyer/customer to see how much overgrading he/she was doing on the raw morgans. The buyer said that the coins were within one grade, advertised to actual. Nice, I thought. Then this. No way would I buy from this seller. This forum has been INVALUABLE, to me, in many ways, including identification of scammers. Thank you, all, for that. Bad for the hobby? Of course. I am, will continue, to be a dedicated collector, yet with all I've seen, and have personally experienced, I am wondering.....where I can get a bit of honesty! Not bargains, not steals, not cherrypicks, just honesty.

From what I can see this coin has a LOT of problems.

    1. It’s not Mint State .
    2. I don’t see the wire rim that ALWAYS shows from 12 to 3 o’clock on the obverse
    3. I don’t see the scallop marks that ALWAYS show at the top of the reverse.
    4. The mint mark is weak, but given items 2 and 3, so what?

Bottom line – I doubt that this is REAL and it NEVER saw the inside of a PCGS holder except perhaps as a 1911-P.

Ahh but you KNOW this is a GOOD GUY. He's an Ebay POWER SELLER! Yea right!!! image

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • With his feedback I wouldn't even look at the coin...... and he won't be a "power seller" for long, I think the requirement is 98% positive and he's not even close.....

I looked at the auction for the most recent positive he received.

It's one of the few that wasn't a private auction (OK, that's interesting...I wonder why? Let's look closer.)

Auction started Aug. 3 at 20:51. Bidder places his bid 3 minutes later. Seller ends auction early ("to sell to the highest bidder at the current bid price") 1 minute after the bid is placed. Buyer leaves positive feedback 2 minutes after auction closed. So the buyer bids three minutes after the auction starts, and in the span of three more minutes not only wins the auction but leaves positive feedback. Sure, like that's not strange.

Not to mention the auction this thread is about says "I am not a grader but assure you this is a one time deal!" Does that even make sense?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    Kranky,

The feedback itself is also a pretty good clue:

<< <i>Thanks for the great deal! Your the best - I don't believe any of your negative. >>

Clearly a bogus bid/bidder just to try and encourage more suckers to bid in this slimeball's auctions.

    Russ, NCNE
  • I posted to the E-bay Q and A forum about the auction. I noted that the coin was counterfiet and the ad was misleading and depicted 2 different coins but inferred they were the same. Think this is fraudulent?

    he he he...

Well, I got an eMail back from eBay saying, in essence, there is nothing they can do about it.

I also got a response from the slimeball:

ahhh we took the auction down because we had it listed as a 5.00 piece and
we realized it was a 2 1/2 dollar piece... what are you talking about
Scamming??? you would of had me leave it up as a 5.00 piece when in fact it
was not.. It was an error in the listing and WE TOOK IT DOWN.

What the hell was this guy talking about? It was listed as a $2.5 dollar but he had a bogus pic of a $5 piece and a pic of a $2.5 piece. The guy must be drunk. lol
