I sent a Expressmail package to PCGS on Tuesday and here it is Wednesday and it has not been entered into their system. This is a 1 coin submission for the 2 day guaranteed service of $100. The coin is a 1880s that came out of a first gen PCGS holder as ms67. This coin has a good shot at being graded a ms68 and this is why I am paying $100 for the service. If it had been entered into their system today (I know it arrived today) then I would have my grade by Friday evening but now they can wait until Monday.

anyone else notice they hold the submission for 1 day THEN enter it into the system THEN grading starts the NEXT day after that!

grrrrr

I sure hope it comes back a ms68!

Except for Bank of America. Their service has increased ten fold. I'm always amazed at how service oriented they are now and have been for the last couple of years- consistently.

So as not to be OT: I submitted at Long Beach on May 29th and just received an email today stating the coins have shipped. How's that for "fifteen day" Service?!

JB, I know exactly what coin that was and to tell you the truth, I wouldn't worry about when PCGS gets it. It isn't going to make 68 and as one of the few 67's left in the old holders, I think it was a mistake to break out.

By the way, I am not basing my opinion on an image, I have personally inspected that particular coin.

this is the coin before I cracked it out and dipped it. there is a small scuff on the cheek and this is the only thing that would hold it back from not getting a 68.

A true CRAPS player. Dipped it too huh? That should make for a good sale telling the public. I find it funny if a coin SEEMS graded correctly these days... it's automatic a crackout. Then when it don't make it they cry. This is just my opinion of course.

I don't know much about Morgans but, to my eye, that strike doesn't look crisp enough for the lofty grade of 68.

come on stman just about every blast white Morgan has been dipped. Would I sell it to a board member, only if they wanted it. Will I cry if it comes back a ms67, nope never have never will. This coin IMO is a high end 67 or a low end 68 by today's standards.

I will keep you guys (especially you stman) updated.

I also paid the post office to deliver my pcgs submission in one day then pcgs took 3 business days to check it in.
Kind of annoying but what can one do.

If I were hoping to get a bump to 68 on that coin, the last thing I would do is post a complaint on PCGS's own forum about their service before they have graded the coin. Man, you have huge circular devices.

I have no comment about the grading. PCGS will accomplish that mission. I do however wish you the best of luck! Maybe some will come my way. I have four coins in the fifteen day deal, two of which have nice toning. Maybe they will give you a 68 and me a couple of 65's.

This supposed to mean if it upgrades your gonna rub it in my face? I really could care less what it does.

And no I didn't think you would cry if it came back 67. Now 66? Yeah you would cry. Even if it does upgrade all you got is a maxed out dipped out lucky 68. IMO, it has nothing going for it that would give it 68. If it had nice original eye-appealing toning maybe you might get lucky. But I guess you even dipped off the textile it had.

Funny, you say you would only sell it to a board member if they wanted it? Just like the rev tone full of die-polish 68 you had that you tried for 13K, then 9K, and I'll bet you were lucky if you got a third of the 9K.

BJ which 67 you talking about my PC or the ICG? Both of mine are true MS67’s in technical grade and they also pack a punch when it comes to obverse color. I believe your little deal with PCGS should have been kept quite don't you think why the alert on the boards? And to Crack that 67 in an ancient holder what a shame pass it on as a high-end coin flip it and make a few bucks don’t always look for the big kill. Like that MS68 you had at over 10K we all know what that one realized no big deal. Hey have a great night it's late on the east coast enjoy.

Considering I bought the reverse MS68 from JB at a show and don’t remember telling anyone its buy price, I find it funny that several board members seem to think they know the numbers. Just an observation.

I can understand the thrill of the crack out and resubmittal especially if you are well off. It sounds like you are just enjoying your hobby and I dont understand all the negativity coming back at you. But dipping it

that light tone and textile gave the coin character...but maybe thats just me. I think it was graded accurately at 67, with those marks on the cheek if it goes 68 then we have another situation like dragons and K6s recent posts on cc overgrades which frankly shook me up as previously I thought PCGS was rock solid consistent. I bet it comes back 67 unless PCGS is monitoring this thread and knows its dipped and spanks it with a 66. Whatever happens I think you are enjoying it or you would have kept low profile and not started this thread. By the way..I loved your reverse toner 68 and envy TBT now

thanks for the positive post. the toning on the 67 IMO was ugly and after it was dipped it gave it much better eye appeal which will help it in the grading room as eye appeal is part of the grade.

I admit it has a slight uphill battle to get a 68 but it has a shot. If it comes back in a 67 holder it will without a doubt be a high end 67 even considering the marks on the cheek. I have seen MUCH worse in 67 holder (have 3-4 right now that are dogs compared to this one).

What's the hurry?? It's an 1880 right?....let it get a few days older. I can imagine the first guy who bought that coin for $1 was probably waiting a few months for the stage coach to get there before he got the chance to grade it for himself. :-)

What is the ROI on the $100. I would guess a low end 68 is worth a good deal more than a high end 67 to some folks. Can anyone give me an idea on the spread here. It always helps to know the odds when gambling.

middle of the road 67's sell for $650 and a 68 sells for at least $2200 and up.

Its actually comical that alot of people are surprised that you dipped the coin. At least 20% of the Morgans in PCGS holders are dipped. Some have retoned nicely and others are very well "done". It never ceases to amaze me how many people think that if a coin is PCGS graded, then it has to be 100% original. Even PCGS themselves admit that most Bust and Barber material in their holders is cleaned.
It makes sense, since most of that material has been cleaned anyway!
Its really your business what you do with the coin, and have every right to share it, but I do agree that
its one of those things that is best hidden until the final result. Its a nice coin overall, but I agree about the probable $100 donation to PCGS, but stranger things have happened. The adrenaline is fun!

I agree that alot of Morgans and other coins that have been dipped are in PCGS holders.

Case in point:

Anyone remember the 1892 Proof Morgan I sent to PCGS that they put 2 fingerprints on when they graded it? They dipped it (DH told me directly that is how they got the fingerprints off)and put it back into their holder.

Yes, I like the adrenaline of submitting coins for upgrades. I enjoy going to Vegas to gamble so that is how I look at it.

I am just learning here, seeking the truth but also glad if entertains others along the way
So am I correct in that there is now Good Cleaning and Bad Cleaning. When PCGS body bagged my coins in the past with the one word explaination CLEANING , they really meant Bad Cleaning?
Does Good Cleaning remove carbon spots?

Dipping a coin is accepted by the industry. Actual cleaning the coin by rubbing, scrubbing, or moving metal is not accepted. Actual cleaning will leave hairlines etc. Dipping will not leave hairlines, but if not done the "proper" way, will leave dip residue, re-tone, and imo NASTY NASTY. Too much dipping will leave a coin with a washed out look and lack luster.

More coins imo are harmed rather than helped when being messed with. Hope this helps a little.

I guess you guys told me so. I can confidently say the coin is a high end 67 IMO.

I was wrong on what PCGS would grade it and am man enough to take the truth. No guts no glory!
