How many have gold coins in their collections?

I only have the ones neccessary for my Modern Type Set in the Registry. I never saw gold coins growing up, so they never became coins to me. Some sure are beautiful though.

I love gold coins. I've got the 12 piece type set plus as many extra types as I can afford. The only gold type coins I don't have are some of the prior to 1834 pieces, which get really pricey. I also have a set $2.50 Indians which is the only complete that is within the price range of most collectors. I also have all the new commemorative gold coins and type sets of the bullion gold. Most of my gold coins are not certified. I've been at this for over 40 years.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I have a few US coins.

I really like the Dos Peso and Dos y Medio Peso Mexico gold, too. I have some of the real strikes (you know like 1919, 1920, 1947).

I've got the usual 1897 & 1997 gold plus a bunch of common slabbed double eagles I got cheap after y2k when the world didn't end.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I have one but am looking for my 2nd.

That is what I collect! If you are interested in getting started with a type set, Doug Winter recently penned a terrific article on the topic.

Barry, I like your 18th Century Type Set--it is awesome. Is that your entire collection? If so, I like it even more!

    Just one now. A 1986 $50.
  • To be honest, I find raw gold coins a little intimidating. But I would feel pretty good buying my first gold coin in a PCGS or NGC slab. Maybe someday! image
  • I got a few shekles...
  • OUCH!

I just got knocked down a rung in the 12 coin type Set!imageimage

I didn't think anyone was watching that set!image Maybe I can sell the wife and get one more upgrade.lol!

    12 COIN GOLD TYPE SET
  • I have a few for my type set. They look nice. They are heavy image I even started buying a few of those tiny fractional California gold coins, cool history there. The only problem is they get expensive.

I have three proof modern commems. I really like them. The 86 liberty and the 87 constitution are sweet. The detail work on the 89 congress is terrific.

I own 35 $20 Gold Saints about 23 $20 Liberties and several of the indians for numismatic value.

I own over 300 GAE's and approx 200 Gold Maple leafs plus many other Large Gold for Investment value only.

Some of the GAE's are certified but i think only about 8 of them.

    Gold is Good image

Edited to add: I recently started buying $1 Gold type 1's as i really like those little gems. image

  • I'm not a big gold collector. I have picked up a few here and there. I think the St Gaudens is one of the most beautiful coins ever produced by the US Mint. Here's my 1923. It is a very nice NGC MS64. Unfortunately my scanner does not do well with gold.

    FatMan,

I played around with your coin a little bit to try and make it look better:

I'm not really very good at this, so I'm sure one of the other members could do a better job, but you can have that if you want.

  • I have a damaged, cleaned, scratched 1801 eagle in fine detail....I wonder how much it's worth...
  • Ah! More Gold Heads.

The similarity with the Saint and the new Gold American Eagles really got me excited in the gold coins again. I can't explain it but once you have held a roll of $50 American Gold Eagles in your hand you will never feel the same again.image

The series was originally started as a means to sell off the US strategic stock pile of precious metal. The cost on the books is something ridiculously cheap like $45.00 an ounce on the gold.

It's just my feelings but I don't think the mint will be all that anxious to continue the series once it has to go out and pay spot prices. IMHO.
Just havinmg a officially minted Gold Eagle in my lifetime is exciting enough! I love them.

I have a few branch mint gold coins (New Orleans Dollar, Charlotte Quarter Eagle, Dahlonega Half Eagle, Carson City Double Eagle) a few GAE's and one proof GAE. The history of U.S. gold coinage is a fascinating one and Bower's book is and excellent read.

    I have three:

1903-S AU Half Eagle, inherited (from the "famous" Uncle Jim collection)
1908 No Motto Baggy BU St. Gaudins, received as a gift
1873-S AU Sovereign, purchased for a smidge over melt

I'd like to get a $10.00 Liberty next.

I only have a couple. I have a nice common date MS65 $20, and AU Coronet $20, and a couple of uncirculated raw $5 pieces. Oh, and an old 20 Centavos that weighs an ounce and a third. It is a HEAVY coin!

I think they are facsinating, but I'm not shooting any pop tops with them, and don't intend to. Just rounding out my collection. I would like a nice medium grade type gold set at some point.

GREAT topic. I am attempting the full-boat 1793-present major type set. I decided to start with Gold for my expensive coins ($300+). I now have 9 coins, including 1849 G$1 in both open & closed wreath types. (I qualify these as a major difference). I will keep focusing on gold for the expensive stuff. I agree, there is something about the weight that draws you in.

I have all but one for a 20th century type set, as well as the bullion and commems needed in the modern type sets.
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!
  • I have a 1912 Date set of Indians/St. Gaudens(PCGS), 1 1924 St. Gaudens, 1 $20 Liberty(both PCGS) and a raw $5 Liberty. Also a handful of GAE's in 1/4 & 1/10th oz.

I would have more gold if my Morgan and washington sets were completed.image

I would make an offer on this, however there are forum members who feel that rare coins such as this should be removed from the market by dealers to prevent the possibility of future ethical problems in the sale of this coin. I guess it is up to some dealer somewhere to buy you out then melt the coin.
I can only venture to guess that the forum members might pay you the melt value.
I would pay more and I also would not melt the coin. To me it still has historical importance in the coin collecting community. Of course, that position is old fashion.
Oh well, life's too short to worry about that.

  • I own only two gold coins currently, and with what I am collecting I'll be fortunate to afford just one
per year. I started out with a 63 Lib then upgraded to a 64 then a 65. Then I bought a 65 Saint, upgraded to a 66 then a 67. I tried a couple of attachments by the upload file capacity is only 50KB WEAK!!!
