How to properly display ungraded coins

commacomma Posts: 1,573 ✭✭✭

I have some ungraded coins that I would love to display somehow, most likely flat down in a small display case. Is there a proper way to safely display loose coins? What are the correct archival materials (I'm guessing some kind of felt but unsure).

Would love any advice you guys have on this. Thanks!

Capital plastics makes all types of holders including custom ones that would be right up alley I'd think.

Amazon sells capsules with every size inserts. They are safe and inexpensive. I use them.
They will keep your coins safe.
I think I paid $13 all in for 50 capsules and they came with a plastic non pvc case.
An inexpensive option. You will see your coins perfectly.

Before I got into albums, I originally stored all my raw coins in these 2X2 plastic holders. When snapped shut, they will not open even if dropped on the floor. I must have 100 of them. Then I have some blue plastic boxes that hold 20 or 25 of them. Printed small labels to quickly ID. Great for arranging and carrying around.

The above snap together type holders work and similar to air-tite (sp) holders.
For displaying I did a thread on it and others contributed some of their displays (link below).
Down in the thread I show some casino chips just resting in the display.
One thing to note is that you mentioned felt. Some felt can tone silver (and probably some other coin metals).

Capital Plastics can make a custom holder, however they are prohibitively expensive for that service. Depending on what you coins you have raw, I might be able to put something together for you.

@Morgan13. Thank you for that information. I have about 50 coins that have been in 2 X 2 holders so many years the cellophane has turned yellow and has also started cracking. James
