Coin/Slab Display Option

lilolmelilolme Posts: 2,734 ✭✭✭✭✭

First I do understand that many don't want to display any coins/slabs and that can be a very good policy. But for those that might have a use for a display:

I have used these display cases or similar in the past for various thing. I then used one for a small group of coins that has some extra stuff with them. Got the idea that it could work for a small slab grouping that I have in work and then this group also happens to be the same number as the Morgan CC set (13). So decided to give it a try.

Below is the case. You may have seen them. They have a soft padding and when you close the wood frame glass lid it contacts the items to hold them in place.
.

.

.
These pictures just show that one could get up to 15 slabs in one orientation or 16 in the other.
.

.

.
Next I bought a padded board and cut it to fit and then cut out 13 slots. This took a little time. This shows it empty with the lid open.
.

.
And here it is full with some miscellaneous bust halves. I put a blank with card in the upper corner where one could add a title, information, a picture or other.
.

.
I did put the CC set in it and I thought it worked very well. The top 3 are 78, 79 and 80. This leaves the 81 through 85, which kind of go together in my mind, on the second row. The third row had the dates after the CC mint production stoppage from 89 through 93. A good order I thought. Really like the look. I will have to make use of this again. Not sure I will ever finish the other group of 13 that is in work but if I do I have the display ready to go.

Of course one does not have to fill it up as much as I did and could do a smaller set or group and leave more room in-between. The board was big enough to do two cutouts so I am thinking what else I could do.

That looks pretty cool. This is similar to how I had my 12-piece gold set displayed about 30 years ago. Of course, I did not leave it out on display. I had it in my safe and took it out to only show certain people.

    Nice job!!!

I like that... and will consider it for my CC Morgan series. Never set up a display for them before... just in coin cabinet. Cheers, RickO

    Great looking display.
Someday if I ever finished my Franklin set I’d like to see it displayed in a way similar to that.

One could do the same with Riker mounts, cardboard box vs hinged wood, if that has any advantage.

This is what I was thinking. Riker boxes are available in many sizes. They're held together with pins rather than a clasp, so they're more secure, but that also means they're harder to open.

12 piece gold - That would be a nice display. Yes, it is kind of hard to leave the display out and even if the value is small since it can kind of be a signal. So good to put it up.

If you try it I would advise the use of the padded board as it is much easier to cut. The first one I did was a solid fiber board. The first only required to cut it to fit the perimeter and then a long slot. But that solid fiber board is much more difficult to cut through. The padded board has a soft foam like core and thin outer facesheets. Much easier to cut through which was a good thing for cutting all the slab cutouts.

I built an automated gun case that you can’t get into without your voice. I’m now working on doing this for my coin collection. Give me a year to finish :-).

That one looks more professional than mine. I guess because it is. :)

    @asheland
Thanks I was looking for something to hold the 13 coin cc set and this worked out well for me. If I finish the other set it is 13 coins also. Still thinking what else I could do with the other piece of board. Maybe CC short set (6 coin) or something just to hold a few various ones like leebone showed. The boards are only $2 (and that makes two) so could do several if I get into - If?

Looks good. The red blends in well with the color of the frame.

Thanks @lilolme. I used Velcro to hold the items in place.

I was wondering if they were held in place or if it was more a static type display for a show (inside a case or similar).

Here is another one I have which I use a bracket to display upright. Not coins but round and worth money - close enough?? These are held in place by the glass pressing on them. I added a little padding behind and put green felt behind them to kind of go with some casino green tables. I had to quit getting them as I ran out of room unless I remove the 3 older ones on the right side.

Nice going. Would really love to see the inputs of other members.

The only time I had experimented with a build my own case type scenario was for the 2 oz. Queen's Beasts series in capsules.

Thought it looked very tacky, so bought a case for it. Didn't quite like it either and the coins went back into the storage along with the case.

Ditto after getting one of those 5 coin slab oak wood case with glass window for displaying graded coins but that too went into storage since it did not feel secure enough.

  • lilolmelilolme Posts: 2,734 ✭✭✭✭✭

@vulcanize I kind of like that first one that you say looked tacky. Maybe there is something not seen in the picture. Correct on the security part. The security would need to come from whom is around when it is out and visible. These cases are easy to put up when and if needed though. Meanwhile can enjoy.

Yes actually just with a code name
In backwards order: Sonof WiFi device paired to Alexa to 120v to 12v relay to ac to dc inverter to dc actuators and 120 v power.
Plexi is 1/2 thick recessed into 2x6 1” all the way around. Metal plates hold the actuators from the inside. Lag bolted into 1.5 inch thick wood x10. It’s not going anywhere.

My idea for the coin boards is the same but vertical, with 4x4s cut down and each with 3 rails so u can slide duplicates behind. Idea is 50 pcgs or NGC coins per board

    Thank you.

It was one of those candy box plastic insert that I lined with some velvet cloth but the capsules wouldn't sit snug in it when kept upright, so had to remove the coins to keep them flush and risk the cloth rubbing against it leaving marks.

As for the security part, it was more of a concern that the visiting friends of my teen kids would knock it down with their horseplay
One of the images from the web got stuck in my head and planned to cut slots for the capsules in thin plywood to be placed within a swivel case having glass on both sides so that both obverse as well as reverse could be enjoyed, but it was very labor intensive. Plans were shelved for the time being and got put on the backburner since I was extremely busy with travel and such at that time.

    Cheers.

@johnny010 Now that is really going the extra step. Looks more related to display of a major set a national show.

I’ll sell them here at my cost when I finish the first ones. Building four to start for my own collection. This way I can enjoy the coins and never worry about thieves.
