A bit early, but I have some coins of mine with a coffee mug, so I thought I'd post it here. Imagine it's a Saturday in June, 1939. Here's an artistic shot with Royal Visit ephemera. The foremntioned mug, a small plate, an old contemporary edition of Maclean's magazine, and some postcards with first-hand accounts of the Royal Visit inscribed on them. One of them I found kind of funny.

Well, posting on a Wednesday is either about as early or late as you can be in the week, depending on the point of view, but those are really cool images Phil!
Glad you posted here and hope you continue to stop by, share cool images and say Hi!

This morning I was looking at some early Pogue coin pictures. These pictures were taken very early before before the auction. Stack offered me the opportunity to view the coins, make some notes and offer some comments on the coins just after the coins were received back from PCGS grading. Two coins that stood out to me were the 1794 Lord St. Oswald dollar in P66 and one of my all time favorite 1796 quarter in P66. I thought that both coins should have graded P67 but what difference does that make, other than some plastic holder. Also, it was interesting that originally Stacks and PCGS used a gold foil label prior to changing to the silver foil. One of my comments to Stacks was the gold label took away from the coin while the silver label showed better the gold coins. I am sure that many felt the same way i did so they sent them back to PCGS to change to a silver label. This Pogue sale was over 10 years ago. Where has the time gone...Happy Saturday.
Broke out the french press this morning. . .Peet's Major Dickason's. . .and a medal commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Metropolitan Opera Company, struck by MACO, #389 / 10000.
From the NYT Archives: Like the centennial itself, the medal celebrates both the new and the old. Its obverse depicts the exterior of the ''New Met'' at Lincoln Center, the company's current home. Its reverse, by contrast, captures in stunning detail an interior view of the ''Old Met'' with its famous proscenium arch, its elaborately carved ceiling, and the stately boxes from which so many opera-lovers viewed so many memorable productions through the years.
I overdid things a bit last night and am waiting for the hotel restaurant to open for my my very necessary coffee because the in-room Keurig is not that appealing. I attended the USMex coin show in Scottsdale, AZ yesterday and had a very nice time. It's a small, niche show but punches way above its weight class. I didn't find anything new to add but I did pick up my freshly holdered SS Japan 74-CC trade dollar.
Briefly, the SS Japan went down 12/17/1874 in the sea east of Hong Kong with a fresh load of 74-S and 74-CC trade dollars (along with other goods and people). Granted, it's a shipwreck coin, but it is tied for finest known from the wreck and is the finest known CC coin (the other six Grade 1s are all 74-S).
AHHH - a beautiful coin & coffee Saturday here in the SF Bay Area:
Special “NEWP” today from a couple months ago:
To me, this is a great coin sold by a great dealer many of us are familiar with (and likely have done biz with). @DesertMoon also happens to be a collector himself. He & I have learned a lot from each other (to my benefit more than Al’s).
Today’s piece was a total learning experience. Al describes the coin as a JR-8 Small Date Large type with unique toning. He asserts most of these MS early dimes are found with shades of gray (& silver if dipped). This example, though, has a classic progression of rose, amber & deep blue (perhaps from album toning). The eye appeal is stunning! Not to be overlooked is the gold CAC sticker; JA has frequently stated in interviews these are awarded to coins @ grades 1 1/2 levels higher than the assigned grade. Or more? Let’s call it a 64+; I am definitely pleased to own this one!
Great coins this morning guys! My favorite morning of the week

So, if I go back in time to October of 2020, when a few months earlier I had started buying CBH’s on-line … I find some items in my collection that I bought that month from someone who became a friend and confidant, and a great supporter of mine becoming a part of the BHNC.
We had been going back and forth on eBay and finally, one Sunday morning in early October, I asked him if he was a part of the Club (this was about 8 months before I applied for Associate Membership, although I didn’t know that was my path at that time). He responded that he was, and I asked him if he knew any of the Nuts on the PCGS Forum.
He responded something to the effect that he only knew a couple that posted here, but that two of them were his best coin show friends, and the three of them were thick as thieves. I only knew a few, and so I asked him who they were.
To my surprise, they were the two members I knew best at that time. We traded some laughs over our messages, and he even told me a few shenanigans they had pulled. I agreed to buy a few of the coins we were discussing and he sent them to me. We never spoke (he didn’t want to take a call from me back then), but later we began to text here and there, and when we finally met in person almost a year later, we hit it off.
I joke about Lance @lkeigwin (my sponsor in the Club), “pushing me over the edge and into the rabbit hole” … but really it was as much Dave @drddm and Blake @ebriker too. And yes, I probably went willingly. I’ve made some great friends in and around the club (and the hobby overall) over the last 6 years, but the “three amigo’s” are the real trouble makers in the beginning of my demise.
So, this is one of the first 20 CBH’s I owned, a number which took 33 years of collecting to materialize in my box. They’ve multiplied 10 fold since, and helped me evolve a little in the last 6 years.
I sent this in for a bean a few years ago, and JA rewarded it, which was well deserved IMO.
I still hunt for 53’s that look like this. It had the almost perfect look for a "Todd Coin" in my box back then. Thanks again Blake.

While my main set is pretty much in stasis as upgrades are not exactly forthcoming, I do have a bit of a side project I'm working on. I own very little copper and don't intend to buy much but I recently added this coin. Not that tough to find but it's a very appealing coin. It's a spectacular fall morning in Northern California, hoping you all have a great day.

October 24.
The history of days in our lives sometimes have interconnections that we don’t realize at first. Sometimes dates become significant for different reasons, and of course, the older we get, the more than can take effect.
I got married on an October 24 … in 1987. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it a long ways (enough for two great kids), and even more unfortunately she died of complications from COVID in 2021, but alas … it was an important day for a long time.
On October 24 of 2024, I got in my FJ Cruiser (I affectionately call her “Pig”) with the last Trailer load, and finally left living in California for my new home in Washington. I had just entered semi-retirement, having worked my last day as a full-time employee on October 22nd.
Along the way I stopped and saw @lkeigwin that day (it was a bit of a detour, and a surprise for him – but his wife knew I was coming, so I knew he was home and awake). This was barely 6 weeks after he had underwent a double lung transplant, and they were temporarily living in San Jose so he could be close to Stanford. He was in good spirits, but rough looking. I saw him again this August at the ANA, and he looked pretty damn good, especially all things considered.
Every October 24 always means I just celebrated a birthday too … and I turned 62 this week. Hard to believe in some ways. Seems like just yesterday I was being the best single Dad I could be to three kids still in school in my late 30’s. Heck, back then I was even spry and (possibly) still fairly good looking!
As far as I know I don’t have any Numismatically significant days on October 24th, although there might be one I don’t remember. For years the only local show came to the town I lived in right around this weekend, but I think the last time I attended was in 2007.
.
So, for today … I looked through the list of dates that I acquired some of the coins I own, looking for another October piece, and decided I would tie this in with a story I shared two weeks ago here.
Two weeks ago, I showed my new 31-106, a lovely piece in P58cac … and told of the 31-106 in P50cac I had sold to John @CircCam a year earlier (to the day even!). In that post, I had also mentioned he had sold me a pretty cool coin that same day, although I didn’t show or mention the coin.
I probably showed it here last year … but maybe not. I know I finally gave it proper description within about a month after acquiring her, so that was probably about a year ago this weekend.
She’s a lovely, original 1836 O-106 (106.1) in p58cac. Here’s how I described her in my notes;
O-106 (106.1), r.1; Attractive and original coin with bronze toning and very strong luster. The toning is unusual and yet dramatic in its own way, changing color and appearance depending on the light. The obverse appears to have been partially covered with folded paper, a ribbon, or possibly tape of some kind, the resulting difference leaving an even diagonal band of lighter toning from s1 and s2, across the portrait and to s8 thru s10. Another area the extends down perpendicular from the first, across the base of the bust and encompassing the date, the curls and to s13. From my good friend John C …

@pursuitofliberty . My deepest sympathy on the loss of your wife. I have been with the same woman since 1979 and would be utterly lost without her. She has always made our house a home and I can't imagine how hard it would be to have to wear as many hats as you did, while raising kids at the same time.
As always, I greatly admire your Busty collection; you have a fabulous eye when it comes to coins. James
GM all my friends -
Its getting harder and harder to upgrade my Capped Bust Dime set. I went to the PCGS show in Philadelphia and did not find any CBDs but I was able to secure a 1829 Small 10 JR-6 in an old PCGS Rattler 65 grade. I love that original silver toning showing its age. Hope you all like it. Oh So original -
Giving Victor Allen's "Doughnut Shop" KCup a try this morning. Exciting day as I'll be able to stream-watch my alma mater in a pre-season CBK exhibition game @ Bud Walton Arena followed up with Game 2 of the World Series this evening.
Enjoy your weekend.

Oh So original -
@pursuitofliberty:
Todd - I love your stories almost as much as your coins!

It's really strange how it's totally and completely random Jon. I could go weeks or a month with "nothing" and getting ready to give up!! The next week 20, 40% 90% Kennedy's and a couple of walkers in one box!! It's crazy!!
Just opened the mail...1909 VDDR - 039. And upgrade for my MS 62 BRN example.
