What color do people prefer on 1907 high reliefs?

I'm looking at two high reliefs right now, and they are quite different in character. One appears to me to be "bright" maybe "frosty" and "blazing." The other more "subdued" and "honey-gold." Not sure my vocabulary is correct at all! All the caveats: web photos, lighting, etc. are understood.

Would love to hear your feedback on what you all look for, what you prefer, etc. Just getting my footing here.

Coin 1: "Frosty and bright" to my eye

Coin 2: Subdued, warm, honey-gold

The color looks off on your second photo, are these in hand pictures with same conditions?

Different conditions. First coin is dealer photo, second coin is a screenshot from a video that a different (smaller) dealer sent me. And this one doesn't seem to take professional looking photos. Attaching another angle

I prefer the color of the second one but (at least based on those pictures) the luster appears to be so sub-par as to be disqualifying to me.

So I would choose the first coin with the proviso that if the second one actually does have at least average luster, I would probably lean back that way.

I think you have no choice but to buy them both. :D

Serious answer, I think you want to see them in hand. A strong luster is a must. My personal preference skews towards a more orange hue. I even have at least one (non-high relief) with cool stripes. Probably a result of the way it was stored, but I like it.

The first one appears slightly processed.
I'd go for the second. It is mesmerizing in its appeal.

I attempted to make a little back-and-fort video showing the luster of the second coin. My eye isn't good enough yet to understand if this is sub-par and dull or not. Thank you https://imgur.com/a/UO5pyck

This is the kind of coin I would absolutely HAVE to see in hand before purchasing. There are plenty of high reliefs in the marketplace, so I wouldn’t worry about missing out on either of these examples.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

Could be a good FUN show purchase. They are a dime a dozen at that show, so you should easily find one that is appealing to you.

Unfortunately that video is short and not great resolution. From the very quick look the fields appear off to me but I can't pinpoint what exactly. I'm confident you'll have some other opinions here.

This coin looks like about average luster to me https://youtu.be/M9xQP_4W1yU?is=3aQuMYqE_5UnxkJH

I would not make any decisions based on “different conditions “ especially at this price level.

Wait, are you saying one of the coins is dipped ?

The 2nd looks like a "cloudy" look....details not jumping out.....I'm thinking it's the camera if not the holder itself....and I would also want to know if both coins have the same grade and/or CAC.

Actually there is a Coin 3 :# which is a PCG 64 modern holder, same price as Coin 1. I love the look but the two carbon (?) spots and the copper splotches turn me off a bit. But it's also a nice coin and sort of the "value" of the bunch being a 64. I dunno I go in circles.

Zero brown spots. I have never seen one with them. “Crusty” is undesirable, if it exists, on a genuine coin.

Sorry I'm not quite catching you here. Are you saying this one doesn't have the spots? There is a small black spot on her right knee, and then another one right below MCMVII. And the copper toning I'm talking about is behind her torso and head.

You could also be saying you just don't tolerate them, which is a different statement. Thanks!

I am not talking about the minor spots. Yes, I’ve seen High Relief coins with minor spots, but not big ugly spots.

I am not a fan of the “crusty” gold coins some people enjoy. Some have gone so far that they don’t look like gold. That is a hard pass for me. You are welcome to them.

What do people think of this one? My eye immediately goes to the copper under her pits :D but the rest of the coin looks quite nice to me.

Relatedly, I'm a little turned off by the dealer's description. The dealer is highly lauded and praised on this forum, but as a newbie several things don't square. The coin has been graded recently by PCGS as 64 (only time to grading) and CAC gave a green sticker. However, the dealer in the description says, "Easily a 64+ maybe more" and then proceeds to lists prices for 65s, but how can this be if two separate grading companies just gave it a 64? Is this just marketing speak I should ignore?

Secondly, the dealer lists the cac bid/ask for this coin and then asks considerably higher than each number (+14k on the bid, +6k on the ask). Is this just extreme transparency showing his margins/markup? A little confused there as that seems to be arguing against his own price. Thanks, all.

The second coin looks funky to me. Coins rarely tone so uniformly.

High relief Saints are very expensive but not rare. Take your time selecting one and there’s no reason to feel pressured to buy one quickly. They are readily available at any major show.

I agree with you and see this quite a bit and it’s a marketing shtick. If a coin was freshly graded and is in a 64 holder and the dealer is asking 64+ or 65 money why hasn’t the dealer upgrade the coin?

At that price level, lack of a sticker will make resale more difficult. I’d rather have the 63+ with CAC and five grand cash than the 64.
