Can some of the Mint error expert give me your opinion on this mint error coin; authentic or counterfeit?

Totally real, and very nice

I’m hardly an expert on Kennedy’s, but my initial questions were, first, if the hair detail was unusually poor, and second, if the edge should show more signs of copper. My first question has been resolved by comparing it to the coin below. The second question I leave to the Kennedy experts.

I see no reason to doubt it.

The reason I asked about this coin is that PCGS put it in a body bag (86 Authenticity Unverifiable). The coin looks real to me, so that's why I want to see what others' opinions are on the coin. I am wondering why PCGS did not want to grade it, because I'm not a big mint error dealer.

I would ask what @Byers , @FredWeinberg , and @SullivanNumismatics think of it.

I agree that a second opinion is in order.

Thanks, I think I might send it to CACG. I want to send some toned raw coins to CACG to test it anyway. I don't like the new TV photo for toned coin.

(86 Authenticity Unverifiable). Is drawing up some indictment papers in order?

"Two things are infinite: human stupidity and the universe; and I'm not sure about the universe."
-Albert Einstein-Mistakes are natural. But repeated mistakes without reflection are something else. That may be the “stupidity” he was referring to. In research, he admitted uncertainty openly. “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” This shows humility. Even a Nobel laureate accepted doubt. That humility makes the quote less cynical and more observational.

That's odd. If it already went through PCGS, that means that Jon Sullivan has seen it. At least that's what I understood the process was.
I'm interested to hear more. Based on the pictures, I would have been happy to have that in my collection.

Goldberg auction. This is what they told me:
"The MS63 grade listed in the description is based on the evaluation of our in-house numismatic experts, who have extensive experience in coin grading and authentication.
That said, we stand by the accuracy of our assessment. In the event that you choose to have the coin professionally graded and it receives a materially different grade, we will be happy to offer a full refund."0 -
63, 60, 61 is all highly subjective on a planchet. that isn't a big deal. however if they are willing to back a number not close to 63, then they'll back a guarantee of authenticity.

I have not seen any errors for PCGS since about March, so I didn't see this one. It's probably ok, but it would have to be seen in hand to be 100% sure either way.

IMHO, the fact that it is on a 40% silver planchet makes it more likely to be authentic, as it dates it from 1965-1970. There were a lot of spectacular errors that came out of the San Francisco mint during this period. I see nothing about it to make me think it is not genuine.

Are you sure it’s 40% silver? Your scale reads 11.3 grams which is exactly what a clad Kennedy weighs. And it actually looks like a clad coin, not silver.

Same as the Morgan dollar sold at Stack's not too long ago. Super cool error type.

"A 40% silver Kennedy half dollar weighs 11.50 grams. This weight is lighter than the 90% silver half dollars, which weigh 12.50 grams."
0.2 gram weight difference looks normal to me. Experts can provide their thoughts on this.

Why would you think this, or where is this information coming from? This is a regular Kennedy planchet that is struck off center. No piece/part of the planchet is missing, just distorted dimensions from the mis-strike. The weight of this planchet should be exact to whatever a normal composition strike would be.
I’m guessing the coin came back in a body bag, and you could do a ring test on it to hear if it’s silver or not.
Sounds like your best bet would be to send it to cac because Jon will see it from them, and he mentioned above that he thinks it’s ok.
