Stewart Blay:

Stewart, as a rule, did not “provenance” his coins. Since his passing in 2022, others have as they acquired them, particularly from the November, 2023 GC auctions.
I’ve resisted the temptation to do so, preferring to leave them as they were when the “master” owned them.
This coin is interesting as he preferred to keep this one over a 65RD he owned. It’s also an officially undesignated Shallow N, a rare subset of a rare date, especially in RD.

Historic NEWP:

I first examined this coin @ the summer FUN show. The selling dealer was previewing it & other coins prior to a sale held on his website about 10 days after the show. It’s beautiful, original, semi PL & with exceptional eye appeal.
I bought it out of the sale. He included a complimentary submission to “pedigree” the coin & add the variety. It’s the JR-3, which is a rare R5. There are only 4 graded, with this piece being the only one in MS. That process has just been completed, with the coin now @ CAC getting restickered. I don’t have the new photos yet that show the provenance, designation & bean. I’m going to pick the coin up @ WFOM & take new images at that time.
The last photo above shows the coin’s provenance. There is an error in the description: the last owner was John Whitney Walker, not John Whitney. He was well known in coin collecting circles as “Mr. 1796”, as he acquired a complete set of higher end 1796 US coins.
Walker was a business entrepreneur, politician & historian, along with other pursuits. Perhaps he is better known as a first cousin to President Donald Trump. A family member described whenever he greeted DJT that he would click his heels, salute & say “Hiel Hitler” in jest.
Walker passed away in 2018 at the age of 83.

Update 9/2/26: coin is attributed, reholdered & “CAC’d” again. PCGS has updated the TV as well:

Somehow, PCGS returned the new slab with two scratches on the reverse. The coin will have to be reslabbed again!

John Gideon Laidacker:

I just bought this coin, but knew nothing about the provenance. Mr. Laidacker was a well known coin collector who lived over 100 years ago. Among other pursuits, he was a station agent for the old Pennsylvania Railroad during the latter 1800’s. His position permitted him to pick out great coins from circulation as well as bank rolls from his dealings with local banks. He was also in close proximity to the Philadelphia mint.
Even with that, he was actually more renowned as a gun collector & considered the leading aficionado in the entire country. Who knew? Certainly not me, but it was thought his coin collection was dispensed over 50 years ago. This coin was part of recent discovery & bought in auction. It’s my understanding there’s a second one to be held this coming November.
