Do you know specifically when you received this one? Most of these have a “S” mintmark below the dates on the obverse and were struck at the SF Mint. That was true until sometime in the 2000’s when some were struck at the Philadelphia mint without one.

I wonder if the Stone Mountain medal would be made today? I'm sure the reverse would not be used as it depicts an inaccurate Confederate battle flag. The actual battle flag was square, not rectangular. I doubt the Confederate battle flag would be depicted at all.

This is the one that got me into the Liberty series. I’m sure it looks even better in gold, but I can’t afford that and these look great in silver too. Plus, isn’t the gold one a coin and therefore does not qualify for this thread? 😉

Who Was Henry Clay?
Those who are not avid scholars of American history may be forgiven for asking. Clay may be the most under-appreciated American historical figure. He was a candidate or presidential hopeful in every election from 1824 through 1848, save for 1828 when he supported incumbent John Quincy Adams for re-election. While that ultimate prize eluded him, Henry Clay cast a bigger shadow over the politics of his era than many who have occupied the White House, leading Abraham Lincoln to characterize him as "my ideal of a great man."
Clay was born in Virginia in 1777, the son of a Baptist minister and owner of a prosperous plantation. He studied law in Virginia before relocating at age twenty to pursue opportunities in Lexington, Kentucky, where he would reside for the remainder of his life. He quickly developed a successful law practice, gaining a reputation as a sharp attorney with great oratorical skills. Perhaps his most famous client was former vice president Aaron Burr, whom Clay defended successfully in 1806 when Burr came up on serious charges stemming from his plot to invade and seize land west of the Mississippi River then governed by Spain.

Massive U.S. Mint Medal of "Pure California Gold," Struck for Presentation to Henry Clay, Lincoln's own "ideal of a great man," in Recognition of His Half Century of Public Service. The medal, presented to Clay in 1852, is 3.5 inches in diameter and approximately a half inch thick, containing nearly 30 ounces of gold. The dies were engraved by Charles Cushing Wright, the premier engraver of his time, who also created the large silver case in the form of a hunter's case pocket watch, designed to protect the medal's delicate proof finish. The reverse of the medal itself features just a partial list of Clay's lifetime achievements, while the silver case depicts the U.S. Capitol building as it appeared before the now-familiar dome was added, as well as the Clay monument and his famous Kentucky mansion, Ashland. Also included are the original handwritten vellum document which accompanied the presentation of the medal to Clay and the original velvet-lined case.
The medal's stunning design, imposing size and mass, historic importance, and distinguished, thoroughly documented provenance establish it as one of the premier examples of American Medallic art.

I have a memory from the mid-1960’s when I was in the 6th grade. I did something in class and the punishment was exile to the school Library where I ended up with a book on “Henry Clay, Statesman” and instructions to read it and write a report.
The details are long since forgotten, but Henry Clay has been with me for some 60 years now. My hunch is that the majority of Americans have never heard of him.

Henry Clay is one of two presidential candidates, from a major party, who ran three times and lost three times. Clay lost in 1824, 1832 and 1844. He has been called the best presidential candate who ran and was never elected. The other candidate who ran and lost three times was William Jennings Bryan. He ran in 1896, 1900 and 1908.
Clay badly wanted to be president. Even when he was not a candidate, he or his suppporters were issuing campaign pieces. Here is a sample.
Clay did not issue any pieces in 1824. At that time there was technically only one party, The Democratic-Republicans, but four men declared they were running. They got the endorsement of their state legislatures. Andrew Jackson came in first but lost the election in the House of Representatives to John Quincy Adams. Jackson failed to get a majority in the Electoral College. Fortunately this has not happened since.
Clay did not run in 1828 because Adams, who was his political ally, was running for reelection.
Clay ran and lost to Andrew Jackson in 1832, Here is the most common medalet his campaign issued that year.
Clay ran for president in 1836, but the Whigs, who became his political party, chose to run three regional candidates instead. He still issued this piece. This is the plate piece from the DeWitt book. This is not easy to find.
Clay didn't get the nomination again in 1840. He lost it to William Henry Harrison, who won, but died after a month in office.
He issued this piece, which is fairly common.
In 1844, Clay ran and lost to James Knox Polk. This is one of many medalets his campaign issued. It's known as "the lying medal" because it's worded as if he had won. It reads, "The mill boy of the slashes (One of Clay's many nicknames) inaugurated March 4, 1845."
Clay was "available" in 1848, but didn't get the nod. He issued this piece which reads, "I'd rather be right than president." That really wasn't true.
Clay died before he could run again in 1852.
Getting back to the topic of this string, here is the 19th century version of a Lincoln medal that mint has issued a number of times. This variety is on the fly page of the 19th century American medals book by Julian. Lincoln had the reputation of being an unattractive man, but this medal is greatly admired as a handsome piece.
And for something unusual, here is an Indian Peace Medal for Millard Fillmore who is famous for being the president "No one knows anything about him."

For medal Monday - Mary Lasker — Public Law 100-210, approved on December 24, 1987, provides for a gold medal to be presented to Mary Lasker in recognition of her humanitarian contributions in the centers of medical research and education, urban beautification, and the fine arts.
Annual Report of the Director of the Mint for the Fiscal Year Ending September 30, 1990 lists a mintage of 254 three inch bronze medals and U.S. Mint annual report for the fiscal year ending in 1992 lists 591 of the 1.5 inch bronze medals. This 1.5 took a little while to find.
An unusual medal where enameling is an integral part of the design rather than added as an afterthought.

Too bad the Humphrey Congressional duplicates only came in the three inch size. This is the bronze and silver duplicates of the Rabbi Schneerson Congressional Medal. 1.5 inch. It feels like I spent ten years looking for the silver, then several appeared on the bay around the same time.
Rabbi Schneerson and Jackie Robinson are the only two modern Congressional Gold Medals in which silver duplicates were sold. Please correct me if I am wrong. I wish there were others.

Chester Martin's design for the Yosemite Centennial remains one of the favorites in my modest USM medals collection:

The Great Central Fair medalette that was put together by Longacre and sold as a fundraiser for Union relief causes. It's also listed as a Civil War token and was struck on copper cent planchets with a reeded edge. It is a Rarity-1 and is very easy to acquire. What's unusual about this particular piece is the strong wood grain planchet which is uncommon for this medal.
