I sent this $20 Lib. to one of the current grading services to cross it over, they said they would not cross it even at MS60, how would you grade it?

From the first photos 62 looks reasonable.

I would crack it out and send it to our hosts, raw. The current holder it’s entombed in is worthless, as it might as well be raw. Certainly could grade an AU58, but I also could see it as a 62.

From the pics 62 does not seem entirely unreasonable. Is there an underlying issue not readily apparent that we can't see?

This was sent to ICG to crossover at MS60 minimum straight grade; they rejected it.

Did you ask them why? If so, what did they say?

They gave me no details except that they could not see the edge and did not want to take the chance. So "90".

Ive heard that not seeing the edge is a problem with the old soapbox ANACS holders with CAC. As above, sounds like it should be cracked and submitted raw. Can’t do any worse.

It’s already basically raw in that holder. Crack and submit.

Many “oh shite” moments have been caused by coins with concealed rim files or damage, so they hedge when it’s not fully visible.

As others suggested, just crack it and send it in since you basically need a 62 from P or N to have a premium…I’m still curious what exactly you were hoping to achieve if it had returned as an ICG MS-60? I know ICG has affordable fees, but nevertheless I’m sure they appreciated the donation here…

I would just crack it. Coin looks unc but it’s tough to say without seeing it in hand. It’s already in a basement slab so I would get it out of there asap and just sub it.

Problem is "in that holder there is an automatic bias" Bust it out, send raw, that holder is worthless anyway. Looks like it could be an unc, best I can tell from pic

Depends on which photo you look at. But they're does appear to be a later difference in the open field relative to the fields around the letters. Hard to ever be definitive from mediocre photos. But we can agree to disagree.

@dcarr look at the pinkish hue at upper left. Again, can't be definitive but looks putted to me.

This was my thinking and it's always been my feeling on some crossover rejections. The TPG, which for me is typically PCGS, has to be unquestionably certain that whatever the coin is it will be 100%. Once they crack the holder they own the coin if it isn't. In this case ICG didn't want to risk $5k.

JMHO, but I think ICG did the right thing.

It can't be cheap shipping $4k of gold back and forth. Break it out of that crappy holder which is actively working against the coin and be done with it. You'll then know exactly what you are working with and can submit it raw. Worst case scenario is you find the hidden edge issue that ICG is worried about.

It’s very unlikely your coin will grade 62 at any of the big TPG’s. The value of the coin is essentially the same at any grade less than 62. I would leave the coin alone and stop spending any more money on grading.

The back story on this coin is that a seller on eBay had it; I contacted them willing to pay shipping to and from to run it through a grading service. ICG is the only one that turns coins around reasonably quickly. The result was that I was out some money, I let the seller on eBay know.

Just looked up the list price. Anything below 62 is apparently melt, so worth a shot for sure.

    .

    MS61. No putty.

The coin is uncirculated, but not worth enough above the gold value to justify the cost/effort/trouble to get it into a major graded holder.

Not sure it’s accurate, but check out the huge price jump at 62. If there’s any chance at a 62 it’s worth a try, else not worth the trouble.

    UNC details.

    Or not.

And if it is a wholesome as you say, 62 is a possibility.

If you really think you can be that definitive off of those pictures...
