1977 Topps Nolan Ryan PSA 9
Any opinions on what grade PSA would give if submitted today.
IMO it would be lucky to receive a 7.

I would say a 7…
it lookslike it has some sort of weird artifact on the surface way down by the lower right corner.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Yeah, or less. Label is from Jurassic Park era.
Centering 9 or 10, edges look fine 9 or 10. corners look sharp 9. surface is the difference for everyone right now. Psa gives it an 8, Sgc 8.5? looks like a decently nice card to me. Should it be a 9? i would go with 8.5.
I must contest. Poor registration, stray print flaws, jelly doughnut on his cap. Reasonably, not close. This was a very early attempt at grading. Massive fail.
Along with the aforementioned print issues, the streak running horizontally across the ANG of Angels jumps out at me. I'd say 6 or 6.5 today. Unless all these issues are on the slab of course.
As someone who subbed a lot of 77 & 78 Ryans that's a 6 all day. Depending on the back it might get to a 5. 77s also have serious issues on the surface so those are all horrible to grade.
PSA 9 with a gold sticker!

That cert series is from Mike Baker...
I think it could get a 7 (PD) or if lucky, an 8 (PD), mostly due to the yellow registration in the flag and the other print defect line across Angels. Those would of course be equal to a 5 NQ or 6 NQ, relative to the registry scoring.
Rookie mistake.
IMO your way off on this one big guy. This is nowhere near a 9 in any way. I think a 7 would be very fortunate and if I had a gun to my head and had to predict the actual grade I would say a 6.
PSA 6
I'm with you. This looks like a 5 or 6.
The real answer is one cannot tell just from an image of the front of the card but just based on that image, it would be much lower than a 9 today.
It goes to show you the conundrum we're in.
Yeah. Sad. I love the 77 set so much and used to love ripping those. These days I wouldn’t even consider that with the poor cardboard quality and how grading is.
If you ripped an FASC box I’d bet there wouldn’t be a 9 anywhere in that box with current grading standards. You’d just get a bunch of 5-7s with maybe a couple 8s.
maybe. i said sgc 8.5 psa 8.. the printing problems are an issue. but the centering edges and corners look good.
The top corners look a bit soft to me for a PSA 9. There also appears to be a noticeable chip in the card stock on the bottom left edge on the right side.

this bad boy would get jackhammered today
Mr. Magoo wouldn't even give it a 9

Ok, but I asked Stevie Wonder and....oh, nevermind.
Lol
That's exactly what I did recently. The cards are piled high in card savers because I can't bring myself to take a chance throwing away all that money by grading them at this time. That despite many looking pretty much perfect to me.

You could receive 9s and 10s, you simply need to send to MBA They will also throw in some sparkly looking stickers for free. Any card with a non perfect edge they will simply trim until its a 10 w/gold diamond sticker.
But yes your point is totally valid they will hammer YOU and us here on those cards

That Bench is gorgeous!
The PSA 9 was actually graded earlier in this case.
centering is to good for a six. probably a seven or eight today.
I believe the 317XXX cert run preceded the 218XXX cert run (PSA used to jump around have used certs beginning with 5s and 6s many years ago, also) but I'm not 100% certain as to the time frame.

The 31xxxxxxx run was considerably earlier. I do know that the 21xxxxxxx run dates to 2013, because that happens to be when I started subbing.
Does early subs also include certification numbers where the 2nd digit is zero: 40xxxxxx, 50xxxxxx, 60xxxxxx, 70xxxxxx, 80xxxxxx, 90xxxxxx?
I can't attest to the accuracy but the information I have is.
31xxxxxx were from early 2005.
I have records of many certs from April- November 2005 in that range. However. PSA was using out-of-sequence "3x" blocks during this period.
The theories on why the blocks were reserved here is not mine, but sourced from the usual suspects so I'm just compiling that here.
the 30-, 31-, 40-, 50-, 60-, 81-, and 90- prefixes were each reserved for different reasons - over the years these included individual graders, service categories, item types, and even suspicion of conspiracy to make 4sc the largest holder of PSA 10s in the universe.
The likely answer is that this was procedural because of the tools of the time.
A question on a cert recently came up and it was the previous query I entered - 14125950. This one would certainly have been from around 2008 and no earlier than 2007. Around the same time half-grades were introduced.
So I think you guys are right on the money there. A lot of the information my tool pulls actually comes from you two so I hope you're sure!
Even with every bit I have assembled and cross-referenced from CU, Net54, Blowout, and Elite there are still huge gaps in what we think we know.
need to have people go thru their old paperwork and share info from the paperwork and the serial numbers of the cards...I can't be the only one who has a good number of the submission copies from 2000 to 2010
Here's some prefix info for those who are interested. Most of my subs were bulk orders, occasionally as much as 1000 cards at a time from 2005 thru 2011, then it tapered off until 2013 when I stopped:
2005/2006 prefixes 309*****, 310*****, 311*****, 312*****, 313*****, 314*****, 120*****, 121*****, 122*****, 123*****, 904*****, 905*****, 906*****
2007 prefixes 0660****, 0466****
2009 prefixes 1430****, 1588****, 1589****, 1615****, 1635****, 1638****
2010 prefixes 1657****, 1679****, 1688****, 1712****, 1722****, 1731****, 1733****, 1738****, 1780****, 1781****
2011 prefix 1894****
As suggested above, this is what I viewed from my "old paperwork".
Thx for the info!
