1977 Topps Nolan Ryan PSA 9
Any opinions on what grade PSA would give if submitted today.
IMO it would be lucky to receive a 7.

I would say a 7…
it lookslike it has some sort of weird artifact on the surface way down by the lower right corner.

Yeah, or less. Label is from Jurassic Park era.

Centering 9 or 10, edges look fine 9 or 10. corners look sharp 9. surface is the difference for everyone right now. Psa gives it an 8, Sgc 8.5? looks like a decently nice card to me. Should it be a 9? i would go with 8.5.
I must contest. Poor registration, stray print flaws, jelly doughnut on his cap. Reasonably, not close. This was a very early attempt at grading. Massive fail.

Along with the aforementioned print issues, the streak running horizontally across the ANG of Angels jumps out at me. I'd say 6 or 6.5 today. Unless all these issues are on the slab of course.
As someone who subbed a lot of 77 & 78 Ryans that's a 6 all day. Depending on the back it might get to a 5. 77s also have serious issues on the surface so those are all horrible to grade.
PSA 9 with a gold sticker!

That cert series is from Mike Baker...
I think it could get a 7 (PD) or if lucky, an 8 (PD), mostly due to the yellow registration in the flag and the other print defect line across Angels. Those would of course be equal to a 5 NQ or 6 NQ, relative to the registry scoring.
Rookie mistake.

IMO your way off on this one big guy. This is nowhere near a 9 in any way. I think a 7 would be very fortunate and if I had a gun to my head and had to predict the actual grade I would say a 6.
PSA 6
I'm with you. This looks like a 5 or 6.
The real answer is one cannot tell just from an image of the front of the card but just based on that image, it would be much lower than a 9 today.
It goes to show you the conundrum we're in.
Yeah. Sad. I love the 77 set so much and used to love ripping those. These days I wouldn’t even consider that with the poor cardboard quality and how grading is.
If you ripped an FASC box I’d bet there wouldn’t be a 9 anywhere in that box with current grading standards. You’d just get a bunch of 5-7s with maybe a couple 8s.
maybe. i said sgc 8.5 psa 8.. the printing problems are an issue. but the centering edges and corners look good.
The top corners look a bit soft to me for a PSA 9. There also appears to be a noticeable chip in the card stock on the bottom left edge on the right side.

Mr. Magoo wouldn't even give it a 9
