Easily the fugliest Walker I’ve ever seen

lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 45,011 ✭✭✭✭✭

OK, yeah, it’s MS65, but I’d wouldn’t pay more than melt for it. 🤮

Makes me wonder… why? Did someone actually think this toning was worth a premium?

To each his own, I guess…

I do wonder if that half offers a slight reddish tone when tilted.
It would have been fun if NGC had awarded a STAR of PLUS grade.

    That coin has terminal cancer.

It was probably dipped and not properly rinsed. The left over acid is eating it alive.

Looks to be a newer holder and perhaps the image captured the coin in the most unfavorable light. I suspect the search to find the most favorable light remains a work in progress that may not come to pass. So pass it is…

Actually it did look like that when it was encapsulated. See the verification photos above.

I still hold out hope that the coin doesn’t actually look like it’s portrayed in the verification photo. Perhaps the patina appears less opaque and less ugly in hand. Fingers crossed.

No, I saw it in hand today, at a friend’s coin shop. That pic in the OP was mine. It pretty much does look like the NGC photos in hand. Obviously I didn’t buy it, but was intrigued by it, since I had such a visceral negative reaction to it. Hence this thread.

BTW, I confessed to my friend that I was badmouthing one of his coins on CU, and showed him @MrSpud ’s most excellent GIF animation. He has a sense of humor, and laughed at that. Even asked me to send him the pic. ;)

Nothing this egregious, but I HAVE seen an NGC “star” coin or two that I didn’t like at all. Usually because of toning. My tastes occasionally differ from theirs, obviously.

I don’t care how vibrant the colors are: if toning is at all streaky or mottled, then it ain’t for me.

I don't really mind the tone. I imagine with better pictures the eye appeal would appear much less negative.

I like many toning patterns. Not this one. Wow....

Yes, not a bad joke, but @MrSpud ’s “off road mudslinging” GIF was even better. LOL 😂

Shouldn’t a 65 have positive eye appeal or at least neutral? Yikes!

I know original and attractive don’t always go hand in hand. But this is more like original and attractive got into a fistfight and are no longer on speaking terms.

An example of a coin that should have been rejected for slabbing due to its exceptionally unattractive toning pattern.

I'd offer melt, and send it back to NGC under its guarantee with a note "please fix this." I ended up getting stuck with an ugly toned proof Mercury Dime that I had to buy (it was part of a lot and I had to buy the entire lot to get what I really wanted). I sent it back to NGC, they dipped it. It cleaned up well and they sent it back to me.

  • cameonut2011cameonut2011 Posts: 10,458 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Send it to CAC. :D
