Purchased this Trade dollar today at a local show. Guess away.

Edited to note that this coin was straight graded by our hosts and is not a details coin. So for those who put it as a details coin want to change their opinions feel free to guess again.
Hope the higher graded people aren’t disappointed.

I’d want to see a video of this rotated under light before making a guess.

First glance details... but agree with cameo need to see better images or a video

Love the reverse on it. Im not sure what to make of the obverse yet

I’ll bite. Blowing it up, the lines definitely are incused and cross the devices. Also looking at the halos around the stars. These look like hairlines and altered surfaces rather than semi-PL fields with die polish.

Final guess: UNC details altered surfaces

Agree, that eagle just pops from the fields. Deets or not, I still like it.

I'm hoping you can help me out here - with grade guesses ranging from AU details to MS65, how can all of them be great? ;)

    I'm in the MS63 crowd.

Just take the middle road Mark. It's easier there.

    :p:D j/k

    .
Also put me down as a 64. I like it, even if the roller marks on the obverse are a little distracting.

    MS62 PL
    Nice coin.

  • scotty1419scotty1419 Posts: 1,106 ✭✭✭

Reverse looks like a proof or at least PL.

Obverse - is that cleaning damage, or die marks? Because the image seems to suggest complete breaks in the luster, I think it's either wear (at best) or cleaning.

Maybe graders accepted the obverse issues because of the overall nicer qualities of the coin?

  • logger7logger7 Posts: 9,514 ✭✭✭✭✭

First thought MS64 or plus; nice conserved coin obviously as many of these come toned out.

The wide range of guesses demonstrates that grading from photos is tough. I find the fields along Liberty's outstretched arm concerning as well as the area under 420 on the reverse. Since you say it is straight graded I would guess 58-61. The guy that posted above me has a lot more knowledge and experience than me, so he is probably more accurate.

Liberty's hair details are incredible, almost too incredible. The stars are also amazingly defined.

If I check Coin Facts, it has 65 characteristics and then some.

Many of your same thoughts were going through my mind as I was viewing this coin for the first time. I saw what appeared to be hairlines on the obverse, above, across and below her outstretched arm. That was concerning to me. Also numerous minor surface anomalies, both on the obverse and reverse, all of which have been discussed by the respondents.
Now on the other hand, as noted, the details on this coin are incredibly well struck. Full stars, head features, hand, all there. And the reverse, a frosty fully struck eagle, with proof like surfaces.
So to answer your question @MFeld, the reason I said, great guesses everyone, was because this coin sends out different messages to different people.
Wanted to add- and this coin possesses incredible cartwheel luster when viewed in hand, the overall look was appealing.
So I just wanted to clear the air and explain my choice as to why I purchased this particular Trade dollar.
Thanks to all, and will reveal grade this afternoon. Zack.

@jfriedm56 , Zack, I look forward to the grade reveal. Before arriving at my guess of MS63, I had considered different possibilities ranging from MS62 to MS63+. And, even though I wouldn’t even consider the “PL” designation that some respondents did, the luster looks to be far above average.

Sadly😉, we’ll still have to agree to disagree about all of the guesses being great ones. As, however unusual the coin might look or difficult it might be to assess from its images, I can’t fathom the AU guesses or the MS65 one. For anyone who’s offended by that, feel free to call me bad names, as long as they aren’t against forum rules.

@MFeld, Mark, ok. let's put this to rest. The reason I said that was to encourage more people to engage in the discussion. If I said the AU details or MS65 guesses were so far off, that it wouldn't pertain to the coin I presented, then that would IMO, turn people off and I wanted to keep this thread going. That's all. Zack.

If it has incredible luster, which is not apparent in the picture, then it is going to grade significantly higher than my initial guess

I was way off but I did get the PCGS part right. Knowing Zacks history for high quality, high grade coins I put up a high number.
MS61 is an unusual grade for any coin.
Regardless it is a nice trade dollar.seen.
