Are YOU KEEPING YOUR STERLING SILVER

DisneyFanDisneyFan Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭✭✭

Back in the day I got into collecting coins after my wife said she wanted a set of sterling silver flatware. I said we can't afford it, so let's see if we can find it used at some coins shops. A few years later I got the coin bug.

With the new prices of silver do you think it's worthwhile keeping as a luxury or are you cashiing?

I inherited it from my mother who recently passed away. I'll let someone else sell it. I don't need the money now and hopefully won't later either.

"Coin collectors" only care about sterling silver coins. There's no way to prove it, but i don't there's any difference in preference for sterling cutlery with the possible exception of certain silversmiths who also made coins and tokens.

Not to my knowledge. Did I say "US coin collectors"? Although many US collectors also collect Canada and various Commonwealth countries.

My father was the most frugal person I knew. Even though he had reasonable resources, he would always order the cheapest thing in the menu, he glued his shoes together, he used to roll the toothpaste so tight it looked like he had used a vice... Despite that, he briefly misplaced his wedding silver and he didn't even care enough to look for it even though he thought a worker could have stolen it. Lol. He hated it THAT much.

There might be a wide range of subjects that various forum members would like to know, regrading what coin collectors think. But that doesn’t mean they’re on topic for this forum.

For example, are you keeping your Hummels?

At a minimum, some of the US Bicentennial medals (Philadelphia Mint) were struck in sterling silver.

No coins that I’m aware of.

I have some .925 Art Bars and random rounds for sale, IF I can get my target price...so far locally that's not an option as the dealers are 70% off of spot or less.
I'll be holding on for something better.

I also brokering some sterling silver rings and jewelry that I'm looking at selling.
Might be able to do better with those as jewelry pieces.

As always I'm Still buying IF the prices are right and I think I can do well on the new arrivals.

I stir my coffee, at the shop, with a sterling spoon. A man came in recently with his original sterling teething ring from his childhood. Kinda gross.

Sold our sterling flatware after my wife passed. First place told me they paid 80% of spot, when I did the math their offer was way off, I called it out and they said “oh no, we pay 80% of our wholesalers price…” yeah BS, took it to another place and got $1300 more than that first offer. Be careful, lots of sharks in that space.

    Can't really respond.

I honestly never think about it.

  • GöttingerGöttinger Posts: 190 ✭✭✭

Difficult question - it really depends.

I have sold most of my miscellanious alloyed silver over the past year and will likely continue to gradually sell the little alloyed silver I have left.

I'm keeping most of the .999 and .900 fine coins and medals / rounds I have, and I'll continue buying more if I can find them for a good price.

But I would never sell any family heirlooms, they will get passed on to the next generation at a appropriate point of time.

I'm considering to sell a part of my historic coins aswell. That wasn't a easy descision for me, but I realized, that my very special niche of German coins will most likely gradually depreciate in value. And as much as I enjoy my collection, I may be better off selling a good portion of my low denomination medieval & renaissance era coins that are either very common, damaged and / or hard to sell in general.

I have some old "junk" sterling silver Canadian coins.

I picked up these sterling silver spoons around 2007 from my then coin dealer.

Never even gave it a thought as far as selling these items.

Thinned out my main set from 24 places to 16, while keeping the harder to find pieces. I have always loved Wallace Gran Baroque, even my letter opener at my desk is in this pattern.
