Are those new PCI artificial toned coins from the REAL PCI company? I see their crap all over ebay when I'm looking for real ones and I just assumed it's some knock-off a-hole trying to scam folks.

    Poor photography.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

Did it get dark toning over the decades?

Sure 66 plus on the ugly scale. Nice coin.

Looks like it stored in somebody’s garage,

Do you recon it tarnished (or got darker) over the decades? Heat, himidity?

I'm pretty sure it wasn't minted that way. At least I reckon not.

    Glad that it’s not a 79-O or 80-O.

It looks like a coin that was dipped, not properly dipped and now the residue is ruining it over time.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

The coin is artificially toned. There are a couple dozen or more on ebay in those new PCI slabs. If they are indeed put out by the real PCI company, I will be disgusted. They had a history of accurate if not conservative grading back in the '90s.

From what I have heard, the latest iteration of PCI is a dealer that self slabs these coins that have already been artificially toned. It is not the holder causing the toning. And we are multiple owners removed from the respectable PCI of the 1990s.

The photos are very poor. I’m split between AT or a very poorly dipped coin that has turned over the years as suggested by Bill Jones.

Definitely chemical usage to accelerate oxidation.

    Not an aesthetic result IMO.
