Holy moly, that is a spectacularly beautiful coin and coin design. Sad that we can’t issue coins as beautiful as our early 20th century issues anymore.
Other passions include golf, Moto Guzzi motorcycles, and Euro motorcycles in general.

This may be my favorite old gold design.
This is the only 1 I own. Even tho I mostly gravitated to modern AGE, ASE, Buffalo proofs, this is a coin I always wanted.
Bought from APMEX a few years ago, MS63, not as bright as the TV shows but still not too shabby.
Been thinking about selling off the platinum proofs I stopped collecting, and buy a few more in this series. But the current gold price makes it bad timing right now. Would like perhaps to get a date series, '09, '10, '11, and '13 then have 5 dates. RCTV had a quad they were selling before the gold spike, but it doubled the '12 I already have.

The Matte Proofs are way out of my league. I am not spending that kind of money for these coins.
Some of them are illusions. I looked at high grade 1913 Matte Proof at FUN which was priced at almost $40k. The coin had been sand blasted so much that it had less detail than a Mint State piece. I’ll pass.
Here's my highest grade example, an MS-65.

Sandblast proofs are an interesting corner of numismatics. I recently picked up John Dannreuther’s book in part to learn more about them. Thanks for sharing.

If I were to buy one of those Matte Proof coins, I'd look for one of the so-called "Roman Finish" finish pieces. I remember seeing them 30 years at about $12,000. I could not afford them then, although I did handle a couple Matte Proofs when I was a dealer. Here's one of them. There was no way I could have afforded to keep this piece. It was about $28k back in the day.

Congratulations on a great looking acquisition. When it comes to the sandblast Proofs, 1911 is my favorite year/color and texture.

Many years ago, before so many of these coins were “conserved” or worse, I could often/usually tell the year by looking just at the reverses. Sadly, that’s not necessarily the case these days, as the percentage of original examples appears to have declined significantly. Below is a link to an example auctioned by Heritage, in which part of the description reads:
“In a vote taken at the 1910 ANA Convention, collectors rejected the Satin Finish used on gold proofs in 1909 and 1910, in favor of the old sandblast finish used in 1908. Accordingly, the Philadelphia Mint switched back to the matte, or sandblast, finish for proofs in 1911. A finer grain of sand was used for the sandblasting in 1911, giving the coins a lighter, more sparkling appearance than the 1908 proofs”When I see an original 1911 sandblast finish 1911 Proof gold coin I think of the sparkle or glitter that can be seen when grains of sand catch the sunlight just right. I love that look!

The only one that I have. One of my favorite coins. Beautiful design.
Edit: it’s not a 2 1/2 or a 5 dollar but I think it is one of the best designs the mint produced. Wish I could afford the Indians of this post. They are out of my price range now.

The PCGS cert number is 82990824. A 1909 $5 PCGS 66+ cac.

Tried to, and finally succeeded in matching it to my $5 example:
Now I’m working on the whole 12 piece gold set in 64, I’m about halfway there…
The tough one is gonna be that T2 gold dollar!

This 1925-D MS62 CAC is my type set coin. It’s got a pretty gnarly “buckled die” (as worded on CoinFacts) effect which almost makes it look like it has rims in some places. I think that’s pretty neat. The effect is even more pronounced on other examples on CoinFacts.
