High demand big ticket gold coins I will probably never own
Lermish brought up this topic in the 1848 Cal quarter eagle thread. Didn't want to hijack that thread but I think it's a worthy topic. Here is a partial list of big ticket gold coins that I would like to own but have not purchased to date and probably never will. Opportunity cost and all that.
- Pan Pac 50s. Round or octo.
- HR Saints.
- Stellas. Either type.
- 1796 No Stars quarter eagle
- 1848 CAL quarter eagle
- $50 1851-1852 US Assay Office/Humbert
And the one coin that I will not put on the list because I still have hopes that down the road i will own one: 1860 Clark Gruber $10 (the Pikes Peak Ten).
So what is your list? And of course you could add silver, copper and nickel candidates as well.

1878-S Seated Half
Gobrecht Dollar
Possibly also a 1955 DDO cent.

running like a water color in the rain...."
I never want to say never, there is a slight possibility I could own one or two of these if I sold most everything and went to a true box of 20. But that is really unlikely. (Also, #1 probably doesn't exist)
1, Chopmarked 75-P Trade Dollar (A nice one since I'm dreaming...)

2. Baldwin $10
Oregon $5

UHR Saint

Liberty By The Seashore

EDIT: There are more of course but these were the first 5 to come to mind.

I dont like never.. can have what ever I want... just some things do not make sense.
Kosoff had an absolute amazing collection of territorials and many have not seen the world since his auction.
1849 $10 Cincinnati Mining & Trading (Regular Strike) is one.
1849 20$ in the Smithsonian
1916 SLQ, Walkers and Merc Dime patterns
Then one that is attainable the
1933 10$
If I am going to pay more for a.coin then a house then I want rarity... not condition rarity I mean true rarity.
I for sure won’t own a Stella and very likely won’t get into many of the very early gold or the rarer territorials. I won’t own any rare dates. Should finish non-gold type but I may balk at the half disme. Life will tell.
The 1900 Akers $10 in 68+DCAM.

The Simpson 1875 $5 J-1439.

I like your list -- mine is very similar although I wouldn't have put the Stella on since to me it seems so esoteric I wouldn't have aspired in the first place. And the $50 Assay / Humbert slug I wouldn't quite rule out as a never-ever. If I were going to stretch for just one of these, it'd be that.
I have four out of the six on your list. I would like to have a decent looking $50 gold slug. The $4 gold has never done anything for me. Years ago I spotted a couple of them struck on gilded copper at $50,000 or so. They are not my thing.
I’d like to buy a decent Chain AMERI. cent, but have not had much luck. I have missed the right coin. I have both major types of the Gobrecht Dollars.
Not gold, but as an MS wheat Lincoln collector, the one that I will never have is a 1958 DDO-001.
Instead I am starting on a 1916 complete mint set, I have a long way to go, but it only has three gold coins, all S mint.
1870 cc double eagle
1933 saint
A lot of good answers here. For my non-gold list, I would include the following:
I did own a Gobrecht that I liked a lot. I ended up selling it because it didn't really fit with anything else in my collection.
"Look up, old boy, and see what you get." -William Bonney.
My gold wish list in no particular order:
1870-CC any denomination
1861-D $5
$50 slug
$10 Gruber Mountain
Mormon gold
Baldwin or Oregon gold probably wishful thinking
And what an example @JBN has (w/CAC)!
I must admire from afar.

Kind of you to mention this Jeff. Thanks for posting the picture Catbert.
Won't bore w/details - a shoutout to @Crusty who was instrumental in helping me secure the half dollar.
There are too many to count for me. The top of the list is the 1870-S half dime. A runner-up is the 1891-O Proof Seated Dime.

The higher cost they are the bigger they can fall.
I would forget about them and enjoy what I can afford.
1853-O No arrows and 1842 Small Date Rev, of '39 half dollars are a big nope.

.
By the way @Catbert , chicks dig SLHs (more so than CBHs) and go wild for guys with an 1878-S half. I can't speak for JBN but I now have to soil myself and squirt mustard on my shirt when I go to FUN shows, or I'll end up being "roughed up" by hot babes outside the OCCC.

A quieter moment leaving the bourse. "Barberian, be a good boy and show us your 78-S."
1876 CC twenty cent piece….a rather pedestrian coin but oh so scarce….
