a stretch for final 7070 coin / Classic Head cent

Large copper was the show stopper when I tried completing a raw 7070 in better grades. The Classic Head turned out to be the last coin I needed to complete the non-gold 7070 registry. Tried as I might to convince myself that I could make a VF work, I could never get over the loss of detail at that grade. XF in a PCGS holder, of a common date, turned out to be a journey itself. Oh, and I wanted a smooth even brown color, without a bunch of gook in devices, with a sharper strike and nice rims that weren't merging into United States.

I had been eying this piece for a while. After striking out on the floor of the Baltimore show I took the plunge and bought this guy. The priciest coin in the set, and a true stretch for my usual price point, happy that I did.

I thought the Seated dollars were expensive until I, like the OP, dived into the market for a nice, problem free Classic cent.
The OP's 1812 is about as close to perfection as you can get in the circulated range.

Beautiful! ...and you're right.... the toughest coin in the 7070 to find problem-free in XF-AU grades... well done!

Nice coin. This is the coin that was by far the most difficult to find a nice one for the 7070 book. At least for the money that I was willing to pay for one. My coin is at least a full grade lower than yours is and it has a couple of nice little dings to boot. And it was still expensive.

    Awesome coin!

Agree with all those who’ve said how difficult finding a nice original problem free Classic Head cent can be.

A nice example of early copper.

A big stretch for me on this piece:

    Nice!

I suppose I will have to stretch a bit to get the last coin I need for my holed Basic 19th century type set. The only one I lack is the Seated dollar With Motto, and those run to the low three figures even when holed. I say "stretch" merely because I'm pretty cheap when it comes to the "holey" coins. It's a casual sideline collection that I try not to spend too much money on.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

This is the 1812 I placed in my cent date date set. I paid a premium for this because it was so nice, and it is now my type coin as well. This is graded AU-58.

    This one is graded VF-30.

And these two are graded EF-40.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

This is (IMHO) one of the hardest designs to find a nice, even acceptable example. @BillJones that is a beautiful AU-58 example!
