Good morning. It is Thursday, March 5th.
Today our type is the Liberty Seated Half Dollar No Motto (1839-65). Note that this does not include the Arrows at Date coins from 1853-1855. That will be tomorrow's type.
My most recent (though bygone) example, and probably my "best of type", was this lovely 1844 in an old small ANACS AU53 holder. It had quite nice luster and I think it was slightly undergraded.
Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

Unlike some collectors, I’m a strong believer in maximizing value. With that said, I don’t partake in our wonderful hobby at all for profit. I partake purely for the fun, pleasure, history, art and stories behind many coins. But there’s nothing wrong with maximizing value. If I don’t do it, I know my heirs won’t know how at the time of sale.
To partially answer your question, I have a LOT more failures than successes! However, at the grade levels I buy, getting a plus added to the whole grade often adds a lot of extra market value. Almost every Reconsideration submission of a group of coins ends up with a noticeable NET increase in market value over the sub cost with round-trip shipping.
There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that I would have a higher success rate (including getting some bumps to the next whole grade number) if I used Regrade vs. Reconsideration. With Regrade, they crack out every coin, and guarantee the new grade will NOT be any lower than the initial grade! However, that means a couple of things:
- EVERY coin that fails to upgrade will have to be resubmitted to CAC to get the sticker reapplied, but since the cert number WILL be different, I then have to pay the much higher “normal” stickering fee compared to their much lower “re-sticker” fee. Naturally, even the coins that get upgraded would have to pay this higher fee too. With Reconsideration, coins that fail to upgrade get returned in their original holders, with the CAC stickers intact, as no coins get cracked out except those that actually upgrade. Coins that get a plus upgrade via Reconsideration retain the same cert number, so the much lower re-sticker fee is charged.
- If a coin gets upgraded to the next higher whole grade number, whether via Reconsideration or Regrade, when sent back to CAC, that coin then must qualify for the sticker to be “solid at that new higher whole grade”. If it isn’t, then “No sticker for you”. Not so with only a plus upgrade, as CAC stickering ignores pluses (CACG recognizes pluses in their grading).

Since I'm a lean-n'-hungry type with relatively shallow pockets, I try to do that as often as possible. My collection is constantly evolving and I frequently sell and swap stuff, always attempting to "trade up" slightly each time. I am more collector than investor, but do always try to keep the resale value of my coins in mind. Gotta keep an eye on the bottom line.
I have never used CAC (the few beans I do own were bought that way), but according to your advice, I think I might submit most of my US stuff to them the next time I'm at a big show.

Good morning. It is Friday, March 6th.
Today our type is the Liberty Seated Half Dollar Arrows (1853-55). Since the Dansco 7070 album and the associated PCGS Registry type set we're playing off of do not distinguish the 1873-1874 Arrows coins as a separate type, I suppose you could post one of those, too. But no other post-1866 With Motto coins, since that will be tomorrow's type.
As it happens, my most recent purchase was a half dollar of this type: an 1855-O with a great crusty original look. I dig those quirky slanted 5s, too.

Yesterday morning @lordmarcovan messaged me, and let me know he’s taking today off, and possibly tomorrow as well. He asked me to sub for him.
Today is Sunday March 8th, so it’s time for the “Liberty Head” Half Dollar, better known as the Barber Half Dollar, named after its designer, the U.S. Mint’s sixth Chief Engraver, Charles Barber. Did anyone ever take a “haircut” selling one of their’s, lol?
Here’s mine. PCGS Pop = 6, CAC pop at 67CAM = 2, just one PCGS graded finer (68+CAM) (and yes, that 68+CAM also stickered)! Imagine how gorgeous THAT coin is! There are NO DCAM’s for this date, at PCGS nor at NGC.

I do not have photos of my all time “best of type” Barber half, which was a white 1898 PCGS PR63 CAM with Benson pedigree.
This is my most recent (albeit now sold) Barber half from my slabbed set. Modest grade, but nicely original, and a key date.
And here’s one I recently bought for my holed 19th century type set. I’m going to crack it out to pin it to my cork board, but haven’t gotten around to that yet. I reckon this would have been about a $400+ coin without the hole? I got it for 73 bucks.
