Just to compare, the 2017-S Lincoln cent in the 10-coin Enhanced Uncirculated Set has a mintage of 211,000. The entire set, with every coin having the same low mintage, can be readily purchased on eBay for around $38 including shipping.

Not a completely fair comparison. Not a business strikes. Look at the price of proof Lincolns remains to business strikes.

I’m having second thoughts. Although my 21st century type set only includes coins made for circulation, I may cap the cents off with the 1776/2026 cent. (Most of my types include first and last year of issue.) Better the 1776/2026 than the omega. Of course I may have another decision down the line if Congress doesn’t end the cent once and for all.

I expect that the 2026 mint sets will be popular, don't know about extreme demand at the current price, but the Mayflower mint rolls, Congratulations ASE, and silver proof sets are selling really well on EBay at prices significantly above issue. I expect that some of the other enhanced ASEs will also be quite popular so it might be wise to subscribe rather than to wait and try to get one on issue day, which did not go well for many this week.

Just a theory. But I think they sell bags and rolls of the cents after the mint sets sell out. Just my speculation.

That is not expected, the mint has released no information that any cents will be made other than those in the mint, clad proof, and silver proof sets. The mint did not sell cent in rolls or bags last year.

Somewhere in the description of the Cents included in UNC set says its only way to get them. Question is 190K max or drifts upward ? My $100 bag'o SAQs are loaded with 62's, hopefully there's more care involved in minting uncs for the sets, or I will play pick o litter. Years ago I got the 2014 Kenndy sets in base metal & 10 for 10 all went back. Kept the 4pc 90% silver set, all flawless.

I am picky & they show pretty product images so I high expectations.

Highly doubt it. It's not on the schedule, they are not going to be made for circulation, and they are already 380K of them for around $50 each. Bags and rolls will totally destroy those sales, and they will probably make money selling 380K at $50 each than however many they would sell in bags and rolls at whatever they would be able to charge for them.

Never hurts to dream. But just realize it is only a dream. Real money is at stake here. If not for us, for the Big Boys. The Mint wouldn't mess around with something like this without putting it on the schedule.

I've never seen any official acknowledgement of that. If they do announce another cent product, I'm simply canceling my subscriptions.

This ^^^. There has been none.

It's just our speculation. Informed speculation, based on the massive price increase of the set, but speculation nonetheless.

But, as I said before, there are not going to risk being able to sell 190K sets at $124.50 by firing up the presses to make millions of cents for sale at a tiny fraction of their implied price as part of the sets. And they are certainly not going to blindside their customers by springing additional quantity on the market at the last minute.

But they never made an affirmative announcement that cents will be only be available in annual coin sets. I am pretty sure the only place @Mr Lindy saw that was right here.

The closest they came to saying it is when they said they would continue to make them for proof and mint sets. Even then, they didn't say they would never make roll sets.

Agreed! You know how I feel about what they doing and how they are pricing it. That said, they sure are not going to jeopardize that by making cents outside the sets widely available at a fraction of the price.

I think they should be doing that anyway, by making the sets to demand, at the prior prices. But they have chosen to go in a different direction.

This is the closest comment I saw in their SemiQ Q&A section.

“Will there be a penny in the SemiQ Program?
Yes. Although no longer a circulating coin as of 2025, the collectible penny can be purchased in annual sets and will feature a “1776 ~ 2026” dual date.”

The less the make, the more they will be hoarded. Probably the PCGS graded ones will be hot for a while then drop in value as new coins and new commemoratives come out. Low Mintage = Percieved Scarcity.

Yes, but they've never flat out said they wouldn't sell collectible rolls. As i said earlier, that's the closest they come to suggesting that's the only place you can get them, but it doesn't actually say that.

I've taken that to suggest that the Mint sets are the place to be, but I'm not 100% convinced they wouldn't create another product.

I actually think that's about right. If anyone wants to pre-buy my sets now, I'd take 175. The only thing in there that matters are the two cents. Are they worth $50 each? Probably yes. Are they worth $100 each? Maybe, but less likely.

Yes, which is why I bought hundreds of these sets, back in the day. But, they have 100% survival rate and, more importantly, they are not business strikes. Proofs and other special finishes can't be considered the same as business strikes.

I think Mint squeezed most resale value at launch. But if the coins are uniformly 65 or better then $124.50 is still painful but worth it as everything seems to be one year only. I recall reading long ago the copper zincs were double plated for proof production. If for ease of manufacturing of 400k clad proof sets, 151k silver sets and 190k unc sets they only ordered up better double plated 1c planchets & also handle them nice there could be some great condition pennies. If they handle all coins with care, not shovels, then $124.50 is a-ok. But I do not sell coins so its just an opinion.

Without being a downer, it will likely soon come the day when 190k will seem a HUGE number regardless of the cent coins being included.

Oh good, only $124.50 and adding a 2.50 coin or two, at least it will make them heavier for the mint to ship, so free shipping might save you an extra dime. ;)

    WOW!

So the mintage is "only 190,000! Such a rarity! :o

Do people really think that a mintage like that, with a near 100% survival rate, is going to translate into a high priced coin UNLESS it gets into an MS-68 or higher grade in a slab?

That sure doesn't justify the price increase for a set of base metal coins. Sadly the way things are going, that might be the only way for most of us to get any semiquincentennial coins.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

We know what they entail. You're not getting anything extra. So, are you out? I'm still in.

    That's two completely different issues.

Is a 190,000 population circulation strike cent worth more than $50? Probably. That's all we really need to know.

You think that a cent with a mintage of 190,000 is going to be worth $50? Okay, maybe for you as a dealer, but I'll pass. The one in the Proof set will be enough for me.

Look at the 2019 W business strike—that might be the best comparison.

    @BillJones

It's not a perfect comparison, given the novelty of the W and the mintage of a million. But it is a data point and they routinely sell around $40.
