Have you ever, knowingly, bought a fake coin?
I was watching this "1944-P" Jefferson and threw a last second bid on it and won. When i first saw it, I had my suspicions about the OBV of Jefferson's hair being the wrong era in design. I compared it to some other 44-P's and the hair is too well defined. The legend lettering font looks off as well. And it is not silver. I am pretty sure there are other tale-tell signs. It will fit right in with rest of my fake 7070 Type Set.

Don't know if this counts. Years ago I bought a 16-D Mercury that has a small " replica " stamped on the reverse. My album looked bad that one glaring empty spot. The rest of the album is f - xf. Can't afford a 16-D in that grade. Album looks great now.

I have a few contemporary counterfeit walking liberty halves, acquired because they are interesting. A fair number of early dates exist, struck in pot metal from moderately worn original pieces. I assume some enterprising individuals were looking for a cash source during the Great Depression.

When I was collecting Lincoln's as a teenager I purchased a raw 14-D from a LCS that was sold as a genuine example. Many decades later when I submitted to PCGS it came back as a fake with an added mintmark. I gave it to another board member for his reference collection of fakes.

I want to get contemporary counterfeits that feature misspelled words. I have seen a dime and two bust half varieties that have the legend spelled incorrectly.
In the meantime, I have this love token on a counterfeit, ex @habaraca. One of my faves.

Yes ... I have had a couple of fake Trade Dollars, a fake 09-S VDB, a contemporary cast CBH, a fake pole cap cent, a fake Fugio, and a fake New Jersey copper. And a few of those fake Chinese trade dollars, "7 mace and 2 candareens" or whatever it is they say. That's all I remember. Most of them have moved on to other collections. It's sort of terrible that they exist at all, but they are admittedly interesting.

I’ve knowingly bought non-genuine many times. Usually, it’s to just get them out of circulation. Sometimes I save them up and send them to the ANA for use in their classes. Other times, I bend them over in my vise and throw them out or drop them in my melt bucket if silver or gold.

A counterfeit Morgan silver dollar from the era when that coin circulated is "contemporary" while a Chinese counterfeit Morgan made yesterday is not not (and never will be).
A counterfeit Sacagawea made anytime in the last 25 years would be considered to be a contemporary counterfeit.

I have knowingly bought a counterfeit twice.
The first time was this 1837 Half dollar. It has a lettered edge. Of course the real thing has a reeded edge. it was like the counterfeits shown in Don Taxay's "Counterfeit and Mistruck" book from many years ago. I paid $15.
The other was a Henning Nickel. I paid $1 for it, but it was many years ago.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?2 -

Yes. A local dealer friend had an "ancient Jewish coin" he suspected was fake; I bought it for a very low price knowing full well it definitely was fake. The thing still smelled of the plasticine they'd used to make the casting mould.
