February Pickups

Back in 1969, this obscure set was probably obtained through correspondence with the artist, Rocco Malanga, who would send back four 3 card panels designed to be cut into the 12 card set. They may have been distributed another way, too (not sure), but they’re baseball card sized and feature hand sketches of prominent Yankees. These sketches also appeared in some Yankees profile pages in the 1968-69 Yearbooks. Somehow, they’re in the Standard Catalog.

1969 Yankees Malanga - Complete Set

1969 Yankees Malanga - Mickey Mantle

The Mantle is headed to Newport Beach as we speak. If there isn’t one there now, it will be the first graded.

I was not the biggest Reggie fan because of the things he said about Munson but god was he a great big game player. Super clutch guy.

There's not a better Reggie card ever made than this one. Super cool.

It's been a while, but I swear I bought one of those 3 or 4 years ago for half that. That's good for you because it means the demand is strong. Nice buy!

Thanks. I have wanted this card for a long time for the reason you stated - IMO its the best Topps Reggie card for appearance.

I attended Game 4 of the '77 WS at Dodger Stadium, the Yankees won 4-2. Guidry pitched a complete game victory and Reggie homered opposite field in the 6th for the final tally. But, it's what I witnessed before the game that clouded my opinion of him for many years. We were seated in right field about 5 rows up from the rail and could see everything during warmups. The Yankees players were chatting with the kids begging for autographs. Reggie walks along the rail and signs a couple items and I see a young kid hand him a ball and a pen. At the same moment one of the Yankees coaches hollers at him to get his A$$ back to the dugout. So he hands the kid back his ball, unsigned, and jogs away. The kid looks totally devastated. I went back to my seat and thought "Wow, what a jerk". It took me a while to get over it. But, I did.

Just bought this on EBAY for $75. This is Dick Pole's rookie card. Only 75 PSA 9's. I now only need his 75 and 77 cards to complete the DICK POLE PSA 9 collection.

Mark Littell is famous for giving up the 1976 AL Game 5 homer to Chambliss which has been seen on TV hundreds of times.

Sounds like something Reggie would do and I remember that game. Guidry was awesome and this was one year before his 25-3 1.74 ERA season. I was born in New York but lived in Orange County, CA from 1969 to the present. I was literally the only kid in school who was rooting for the Yankees in 77 and 78. I took a lot of shit from people but it was all worth it when the Yankees won both World Series.

You were so lucky to attend that game. I wanted to go but my Dad could not afford the tickets.

He was and still is a jerk, but at least in 1970's he was money in the post season. He wasn't bad on a Love Boat episode either.

I was at Columbia U when he came to NY.

Some weren't impressed with his ego.

But, Reggie: 1. I'm gonna get the Yankees to the World Series: check. 2. We're gonna win the World Series: check. 3. They'll name a candy bar after me: check.

I went to the West Coast Card show in Ontario yesterday and I'm glad I did. Without a doubt the best event I have attended since I returned to the hobby 3-4 years ago. 95 percent were sports cards. I was expecting a ton of Pokemon but one of the dealers told me the show was specific for sports cards.

There was ample vintage for sale and to my surprise there was at least 20 tables that had high end vintage. Examples include a 57 Mantle in PSA 8, a 53 Mays in PSA 8, and lots of PSA 8 and 9 hall of famers from 56 and 57. The show ends on Sunday so I highly recommend the event if anyone is considering attending.

Regarding the prices - most vintage was priced at least double of current comps.

I picked up the following three cards:

Just curious - were you able to negotiate pricing down on your acquisitions? Would you estimate that any dealers selling at double current comps were even willing to negotiate?

I was only able to get $20 off on the Drysdale and Brooks Robinson which I purchased from the same seller. The Frank Robinson was from another seller and he wanted $320 and I offered $300 and he said no. I think the card is worth more than $320 so I bought it anyway. This was the worse I ever did negotiating prices at a convention. I always do much better.

The last couple of conventions I went to I was able to negotiate prices. Example I purchased two cards that the seller wanted $550 for I gave him $500. Another seller had a card he wanted $350 for and we agreed on $300. I had to pay cash for the discounts which I did. I watched a lot of deals going down yesterday and the sellers with high grade vintage were not coming down much from their prices if at all. As an example one guy had a nice 1959 PSA 8 Gibson rookie for sale and wanted $9,800. I watched a guy offer him $9,200 cash and he turned him down. The seller did not even offer a counter. The potential buyer left the table and no deal was done. IMO it was a sellers market for high grade vintage. Many dealers were telling me they have to pay 85-90 percent for good material now since it does not come up for sale that much.

There was one seller that really stood out. He had about 15-20 key vintage cards that were ALL PSA 9 OC. I have never seen so many PSA 9 OC in one place in my entire life. He did not have one PSA 9 for sale, only 9 OC.
