Insane haul Baz!! How many packs total did that all come from?
I know I have some 83T Gwynn’s in some racks but it’s prob not worth ripping the rack to get to him. Short of that and one or two other sequences I know little.

Conundrum - Loving my unopened baseball card collection....but really like ripping too
From my prior 1990 UD Hockey rip, you know I am a fan of the rookie crop this year. I also put away a few cases of the 1990 Score Canadian Hockey Boxes. Thought this would be a fun way to spend my afternoon hunting for Hall of Fame rookie cards of Martin Brodeur, Eric Lindros, Jaromir Jagr, Curtis Joseph, Jeremy Roenick, Mike Modano, Rob Blake, Alexander Mogilny, Mats Sudin, Scott Niedermayer, and many of the USSR red army elite. Such a fun year to rip and see all of these superstars contained in one set.
Time for some more 1987 Donruss packs from the counter display that I opened. I am mixing in some Pop Up packs too. These were priced the same as wax packs back in the day and allowed kids to “mix and match” their packs for $0.50 each. The oversized cards in the pack are tough in high grade since only 3 came to a pack and this wrapper did little to protect the thin stock edges and corners. Here goes…

Man this set is loaded with rookies. Too bad the set was massively overproduced. Here are the rookies and stars in this box…
Always fun to pull the big 3…
Man I loved hunting for the Lindros card when buying packs at the store. Such a great looking set. Loved how the did it with the red line and blues lines included.
Hey, long-time watcher, but first post here. Love what you’re doing and thanks for all the stats on the search for high grade cards.
Unusual idea for very low grade cards: I just opened a 1981 Fleer wax box, and the gum is nice and stuck to the bottom card of every pack. My idea is to try to create a set of 1981 Fleer with gum attached. If anyone has some of these cards, please send an IM and leave the gum attached! Thanks and happy collecting.

Greatest... new thing..... to do..... in card collecting... like forever. Nice !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jordangretzkyfan, with all of this, you have probably mastered the art of eyeball grading. Do you use any measuring tool or other, or just go straight with the eyeball visuals?
I have this issue of my brain trying to make a card more centered than it really is. For 'close' cards I spend like 10 minutes turning the card top to bottom, side to side, do the same with back eyeball visuals, weigh the back verse front centering, then talking myself into the card being perfectly centered.... and I include it in the send in stack and get all 9's
That is my own personal torture when rolling through 80's wax and other stuff.

Thanks for the question Dbacks. I am not very sophisticated. I just start by eyeballing centering to be truly 50/50 which immediately disqualifies 90% of 1980s cards. Then scan the surface for dimples/pimples and any stresses or creases. That removes another 5% of them. Last, I check corners and edges under magnification to make sure they are sharp. That removes another 3-4% of them, leaving about 1-2% that I set aside to grade. Prior to submitting anything, I go back again and remove any that are not truly 50/50 or if I notice any print specks I missed the first time. Prior to 2020, this would land me about 50% PSA 10 on a sub with the rest being PSA 9. Once in a blue moon I would miss a tiny stress and land a PSA 5.
Nowadays, it is anyone’s guess if I will land any PSA 10. I have not subbed since I started this journey, but will get around to subbing the stars eventually. I will certainly share my results when I do.

Had some down time this afternoon and ripped another 1987 Topps Vending Box. Here were the results. Stars not worth grading…
The key rookies that miss the mark…
And the 3 candidates for PSA 10, headlined by a HOFer…

The Pop Up packs are really cool. I overlooked these as a kid. Here were the key cards…
I think this Gary Carter has a shot at PSA 9…
i was really hoping for a maddux rookie great cards.
I don't remember those popups at all. Very cool.
As a huge Mattingly fan, the thing I remember most about these is learning how terrible he was in All-Star Games. 1 hit in 11 career PAs
IIRC Winfield was excellent in those games.

Welcome!
That was a fun rip today. Here are the stars that miss the grade…
Some of the better rookies in the set that are not worthy of grading…
And, at first cut, there were 10 candidates for PSA 10 in this box. Love that Brett and Palmiero were among this group…
