Here is Ben Johnson's explanation:
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has explained his decision to play it safe and go for the extra point instead of attempting a potential game-winning two-point conversion against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night.
The Bears gave their home fans a moment they will cherish forever, with Caleb Williams completing a miracle play to send the Divisional Round clash into overtime. The quarterback’s touchdown throw to Cole Kmet left NBC’s Cris Collinsworth in shock, with the veteran announcer forced to confess it was unlike anything he’d ever seen.
Chicago had an opportunity to go for the win but opted for a game-tying kick, which would ultimately result in a loss in overtime.
Johnson told reporters he considered going for the two points but did not feel confident due to previous failures at the goal line.
“Thought about it. Probably what played a little bit of a factor was, you know, our goal-to-go situations hadn’t gone very clean,” he said. “Our inside the five plan hadn’t worked out quite like we had hoped, and so just felt better about taking our chances there in overtime.”
There were fears that the Rams were in danger of leaving empty-handed after the touchdown, given their clutch exploits all season, but Johnson decided to take a chance on overtime.

They were getting stuffed at the goal line. Johnson will be rethinking his attitude towards kicking field goals during the offseason. I’m sure several teams will be examining the logic behind declining 3 easy points in a low scoring game. He had multiple opportunities and shrug them off. Sigh.😞

Johnson was a rookie head coach. Considering the already mentioned circumstances, the right decision would have been to immediately line up, before the defense had time to think about it, then complete a short pass to win the game.
I think Johnson will learn from his mistake. If not, then he will have a short tenure as a head coach.
Ben Johnson squeezed more out of the orange than even my lofty expectations ever could have imagined in year 1. he's a phenomenal coach, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Caleb has improved by leaps and bounds with BJ at the helm.
as for his decision not to go for 2, i would have been good either way. going for the deuce would have been a very Ben Johnson thing to do, but it had been very tough sledding inside the Rams' 5, as he alluded to. taking it to OT did not turn out to be a poor decision, as the defense forced a 3 and out, then the offense was about 15 yards away from a kick to win the game. we just couldn't seal the deal.

Nine head coach openings - that has to be some kind of record?
And Sean McDermott makes a whopping 10.
10, and there are not 10 marketable head coaches out there
many of these teams are going to continue to suck
Agreed but at least they are making moves
My Patriots were 1 and done with that clown Gerard Mayo and moved on from a first round draft pick at QB and look how lucky they got? It can happen but won't without trying
McDermott should have been fired the following year after another playoff exit after that Chiefs 13 second loss in the AFC championship game

One final word on the subject of the 2. I realize it's tough as a head coach when you're in the moment, as to what to do. So many variables involved, and so little time to make a decision.
Not to pile on because the Bears did have a nice season, and the future looks bright with this head coach. But in my opinion, there isn't a single Bears fan out there who would have been upset with a call to go for 2, and not succeeding. And if it had succeeded, Bears fans would be jubilant right now. Bottom line - it's spilled milk, and nothing can be done about it except to move on, and look forward to next season.

no disrespect to Denver, but Buffalo at New England would have been an AFC Champ game for the ages
ratings would have blown the roof off
This Denver game is not going to be a walk in the park, Bo Nix might be Denver's weakest link honestly, not saying Stidham is an upgrade by any means but the core of this team is their D and running game
If Denver plays D like they did against Buffalo I like our chances, but either way Maye needs to hold on to the ball and play better if we are going to the Super Bowl
It is astonishing to me that the 2025 Broncos have been able to find a way to win 12 out of 14 games (out of 18 played so far) where the margin of victory is ten points or less. For whatever reason the stars have aligned in Denver's favor this season.
I have no idea who will win the AFC crown, but I am pleased my favorite team will be hosting the AFC title game.

You have the quarterback who is an amazing runner, and most of the plays he ran were basic running plays with a rather small running back. If I remember correctly, most of those runs lost yardage.
Quarterback draw? Just roll him out and let him decide to throw it or pass it?

Exactly.
Let's be honest, defensive football players aren't the sharpest tools in the toolbox. Line up quickly, and the defense is going to instinctively in that situation want to stop the run up the middle. A roll out, keep the pass defenders occupied and Caleb may have walked into the end zone for the win. If that is covered extremely well, Caleb is talented enough to get the football to a receiver, even at the other end of the field if necessary.
Anyone else care to make a prediction for the two Conference Championship games this coming weekend?
I think Seattle will win the NFC crown.
I have no idea who will win the AFC crown (hopefully Denver)
I understand that Seattle has the #1 ranked defense; Denver has the #3 ranked defense; New England has the #4 ranked defense and the Los Angeles Rams have the #10 ranked defense in the NFL this season.
The adage that Defense wins Championship appears to be alive and will in the NFL this year.
If perchance Seattle and Denver win and play in the Superbowl I hope that the game will not be a repeat of Superbowl 48 (where Denver's 43-8 destruction at the hands of the Seattle manifested itself on the opening kickoff when Denver blew the play and got tackled in the end zone giving the Seahawks a safety and a 2-0 lead).
Denver had a high charged offense that year but Seattle's Legion Of Boom absolutely destroyed the Broncos. The game was (for Denver fans) extremely painful to watch.
I think Seattle vs. A Toss Up in the Super Bowl. I think the Patriots have the edge due to the Bo Nix injury but Denver, as much as I don't like the franchise, has to be the sentimental favorite with home-field advantage. I'm still trying to figure out how New England managed to make it to another Championship game so quickly. I think it's Vrabel.

The Pats definately had a breeze of a schedule and was fortunate enough to play against CJ Stroud who probably had the worse playoff performance ever
Now they face Denver without Nix
Being honest I don't believe they have a good shot at winning it all but they are still one game away for playing in the Super Bowl so call it luck or whatever, they are there

I think the Patriots win this weekend. honestly, I dont fear either of the NFC teams. If NE makes the SB, I could see either one beating the Patriots, but I do not see either as a juggernaut type of team. Stafford concerns me way more than Darnold.
of course, I also had very little respect for Eli Manning and we all know how that turned out.

Of the 2 NFC teams it's the Seattle D that concerns me more
But the playoffs is one game at a time so let's try to get through Denver first!

agreed, they need to get through Denver first. last i heard, they are 5.5 point fav. at Denver. considering they usually give 3 points to the home team, vegas thinks NE wins by over a TD. Stidham does not scare me one little bit. it has been over 2 years since he has thrown a pass in a regular season game. I am pretty confident of a win.
like i mentioned above though, I was exceedingly confident back in 2007 when we were 18-0
Denver better have a balanced game where the offense retains the ball. This to give their defense a rest. If their offense can't move the ball it will be a long day for the Denver defense. 3 and out won't cut it.

LA is exploding before our eyes. They given up two touchdowns between the two haves. If Stafford fails to change into his Superman outfit, they are dead. This team has been very spotty all season, and their spots tonight indicate loser.

Play chicken-chit football, get chicken-chit results. I'm sure that Lombardi would have went for 2 in that situation.
I doubt it. He signed for 100 million dollars over 5 years. Plus he gets to coach in the limelight of New York which some people relish.
Being his team is in the NFC East and it's New York, I hope he falls flat on his face. 😉

Not to pile on because the Bears did have a nice season, and the future looks bright with this head coach. But in my opinion, there isn't a single Bears fan out there who would have been upset with a call to go for 2, and not succeeding. And if it had succeeded, Bears fans would be jubilant right now. Bottom line - it's spilled milk, and nothing can be done about it except to move on, and look forward to next season.

no disrespect to Denver, but Buffalo at New England would have been an AFC Champ game for the ages
ratings would have blown the roof off
The sadness is creeping in. It feels like when I wrecked the car. I felt bad when it happened. Next day, I woke up and actually looked at it and cried.
“Aw crap I wrecked the car.” 😭
Hell hath no fury like a Northside slump.
Denver continues to be underestimated.
If it's astonishing to you that might be why a lot of people underestimates your team lol
Hope it's a good game and may the better team win
I was surprised at Chicago's play calls on those goal line failures.
You have the quarterback who is an amazing runner, and most of the plays he ran were basic running plays with a rather small running back. If I remember correctly, most of those runs lost yardage.
Quarterback draw? Just roll him out and let him decide to throw it or pass it?
i was thinking the same thing. why arent they giving him the option to run it in???
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
So whose going to hire Beli because hes a disaster at UNC

Patriots 24
Denver 23
Seattle 35
Rams 24
Perkdog.
You made a mistake in the score.
Denver 24
Patriots 23
Like I said, may the better team win my friend 🍻

Being honest I don't believe they have a good shot at winning it all but they are still one game away for playing in the Super Bowl so call it luck or whatever, they are there
Im not a Pats fan, but I am a big fan of Maye. He has the ability to win games even if the other team is better which is basically what he did his entire time in college

Will go out on the proverbial limb. Rams in a shootout over Hawks,Pats over Denver. Rams in a shootout over Pats. NFL likes offense as do the viewers.
I love him but he annoys the crap out of me when he is in the pocket and it's collapsing all around him and he hangs the ball up too long rather than accepting that he doesn't have time to throw and gets hit and fumbles
I think the Patriots win this weekend. honestly, I dont fear either of the NFC teams. If NE makes the SB, I could see either one beating the Patriots, but I do not see either as a juggernaut type of team. Stafford concerns me way more than Darnold.
of course, I also had very little respect for Eli Manning and we all know how that turned out.
twice...
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
I am pretty confident of a win.
like i mentioned above though, I was exceedingly confident back in 2007 when we were 18-0
still not over that one!
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Vegas thinks NE wins by over a TD?? Is that really what you infer from that spread??7

Right now Sean Payton is probably collecting money for the bounty for defensive players to destroy Drake Maye.
I wouldn't put it past him lol
Denver better have a balanced game where the offense retains the ball. This to give their defense a rest. If their offense can't move the ball it will be a long day for the Denver defense. 3 and out won't cut it.
Just looked at the playoff history between Denver and New England.
They have played 5 playoff games against each other, 4 games in Denver and 1 game in New England.
The home team has won every game, leaving Denver with a 4-1 advantage.
The 5 games are:
Jan 4, 1987 (Divisional): Denver 22, New England 17
Jan 14, 2006 (Divisional): Denver 27, New England 13
Jan 14, 2012 (Divisional): New England 45, Denver 10
Jan 19, 2014 (AFC Championship): Denver 26, New England 16
Jan 24, 2016 (AFC Championship): Denver 20, New England 18
I wonder if this trend (home team wins) will continue or be broken this weekend.
Hopefully the trend will continue.
Go Denver!!!!!!!
Tell the WRs to get open lol. He does do that sometimes but its not like theyre facing a high powered offense even if Nix was playing. As annoying as Portnoy and some other fans get I think theyre going to win

Hope your right brother
i don't think anyone mentioned that the Steelers hired Mike McCarthy
is that considered to be an upgrade?
to me that's like sh*tting your pants and changing your shirt
LA is exploding before our eyes. They given up two touchdowns between the two haves. If Stafford fails to change into his Superman outfit, they are dead. This team has been very spotty all season, and their spots tonight indicate loser.
btw that Rams punt returner is doing his best to help Seattle win
he muffed one in the first half and was lucky to get on it
then he decides to try to catch a punt while falling backward and hands Seattle a touchdown
i wonder if LA is going to bench him before he ends their season
It will be criminal if they let that kid back.in this game
Like for real
Whatever Stafford might do won’t keep up with the inept Rams defense. These guys may as well borrow the “Stop sign” from the elementary school crossing guard in the Mahomes commercial.
moron of the century goes to #27 for Seattle
i thought this seattle D was supposed to be otherworldly. not all that impressed so far. Houston looked much tougher/more aggressive.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
