I saw a 1799 U.S. Dollar once that I would call a Proof, and I would say that it is nicer than this piece, IMHO.

GC is stating finest due to the coin’s grade. “Nicer” is different.

Should ended up being a new all time high on Great Collections.

Hat tip to Ian, his team, and the consignor. Though I don’t play in this realm, I think it would have been borderline unfathomable to consign this coin there 7-8 years ago…..now it’s likely quite savvy.

Way beyond my pay grade. The best I have is an 1800 half dime in MS-64, and that was a high end stretch for me.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. Hmmmmm. I “get” the rarity and grade opinion but at least, from the photos,…..I see little drop dead eye appeal there.

    Winning bid was $1.375MM!
As an aside, there were 3 or 4 other GC auctions tonight with $1MM+ winning bids. 2 were in excess of $2MM; one of those was nearly $3MM!

PCGS appears to have been a little conservative on the coin in 1988 when it was graded MS-65.

Missed out on viewing the coin then as it was either out or I had run out of time. Have not ever seen it so don't know what I would call it.

No color photos of it in the 1988 catalog. Can be hard to photo match to 1988, but it matches up by a speck of toning between the bases of the R and I in AMERICA (the dot by the M might be in the die).
