I saw a 1799 U.S. Dollar once that I would call a Proof, and I would say that it is nicer than this piece, IMHO.

GC is stating finest due to the coin’s grade. “Nicer” is different.

Should ended up being a new all time high on Great Collections.
Hat tip to Ian, his team, and the consignor. Though I don’t play in this realm, I think it would have been borderline unfathomable to consign this coin there 7-8 years ago…..now it’s likely quite savvy.
She's a hottie!
Amazing coin. Guess as to hammer price?

I’ll take a stab and guess $1.43 million final (1.3 million + juice)
Way beyond my pay grade. The best I have is an 1800 half dime in MS-64, and that was a high end stretch for me.
Hmmmmm. I “get” the rarity and grade opinion but at least, from the photos,…..I see little drop dead eye appeal there.
AU63 due to rub on her cheek and shoulder
11.5$ Southern Dollars, The little “Big Easy” set
I honestly prefer my old coin and $750k in the bank

It was on my watchlist and I bid aggressively. I guess my $50K bid did not cut it………..
I would be okay with a pile of dog poop and $750,000 in the bank
All comments reflect the opinion of the author, even when irrefutably accurate.
Well maybe if the dog poop had a gold GAG sticker,
Winning bid was $1.375MM!
As an aside, there were 3 or 4 other GC auctions tonight with $1MM+ winning bids. 2 were in excess of $2MM; one of those was nearly $3MM!

PCGS appears to have been a little conservative on the coin in 1988 when it was graded MS-65.
Missed out on viewing the coin then as it was either out or I had run out of time. Have not ever seen it so don't know what I would call it.
No color photos of it in the 1988 catalog. Can be hard to photo match to 1988, but it matches up by a speck of toning between the bases of the R and I in AMERICA (the dot by the M might be in the die).
