What was your last buy?? Silver FOMO has begun

Mike59Mike59 Posts: 424 ✭✭✭✭

Last month I bought a vintage JM 100 ounce bar at spot for $4900 and I thought I was crazy. What was your last silver buy?

A roll of ASEs in March '23 for $27.31 each delivered.
I picked out 8 to send to PCGS... 7 of them made MS70.

    When in doubt, don't.

I think full 6 or 8 serving sets are going for $3 - 5 grand. And our grandparents saved up a lifetime to buy them at $3-5 hundred $'s.

Last thing I bought was when I scrounged a 64 Kennedy and a Franklin plus 7 40% halves CRHing a couple weeks ago. That cost $4.50, I went out again this week and hit a few banks but was skunked for my efforts.

This 5.26-troy-oz ingot cost almost as much as your 100-oz bar. But it has a very high collector premium.
If the price of silver goes up, that won't affect the value of this bar very much.
And if the price of silver crashes, that still won't change the value of it very much.

Yes I agree but that bar is US History and my bar was just a vintage JM 100 oz Silver bar.
Why was the mint making or dealing in such small bars??
Did they accept them from people, assay them and when they had enough weight make them into 90% blanks???

Been selling silver the past six months but still riding the wave with "paper."

    .

The reason for making the earlier bars (especially small ones) is somewhat of a mystery.
One theory is that when a large pour was made for large ingots to be rolled out for planchets, remaining molten silver in quantities too small for a planchet ingot were poured into these smaller ingots.

Some of the later ingots (circa 1964-1968) may have been used for silver certificate redemption. These later ingots often weigh about 100 troy ounces and often have no stamped markings, just a grease pencil weight written on them. These are known as "grease bars".

I just bought about 22 grams of 10k and 14k jewelry from a young reddit user who got the idea there; to go to Walmart and buy the 75% off jewelry. Paid him and he said he was going to go find all
he could. That’s what I would call “counter”-productive. Then I turned around and ordered another 400 oz silver (@$73.44), which isn’t enough to cover demand for the next few days, the way this surge on the white metal goes. And that concluded 2025. Happy new day.

Oh, and I got this the other week for below melt and anticipate doubling my money but I'm hoping for some PF70 and doing better. I made a killing on a modern bullion submission I made forever ago, which paid for the 25 slabbed peace and morgans and this.

Some guy decided he wanted the entire submission and didn't even care to send offers and just wiped me out. Then this fell in my lap so I was bound by coin law to buy it.

Bought this set in March 2001 for $139.95. It is a beautiful set, nicely packaged.

I'll know more about these when they arrive.
The 20 grams for 5 bracelets look a little odd.

    .

That is quite a deal at the current silver price.
There might even be a couple premium coins in there, depending on date and condition.
