I was very pleased to win this Chalmers six-pence at a recent SB auction. It's a low grade--F15--but also a scarce coin. I did not know that these came with "large" and "small" dates. This is a small date, which is apparently scarcer than the large date. However, what I liked most about were the generally smooth surfaces.
I stopped playing the "complete the set" game several years ago, choosing instead to just go after single coins that spoke to me. But it always has bothered me that I was one coin short of completing my standing Liberty quarter set (all my other sets were complete, but I had grown weary of the never-ending "upgrade" routine).
My state will be charging sales tax on coins, starting on January 1, and the sales tax in my county is 10%, so I decided that it was time to buy that last SLQ.
So I did.
I have never spent anywhere close to this much on a coin, and I doubt I ever will again. But I'm going to enjoy this one!
This is my first coin in a CACG holder (they're quite attactive).

Great accomplishment! One of my favorite series too. Any chance of showing your completed set of SLQs?
I’m sure many of you saw the batch of nice Seated Liberty quarters that went off last night on HA.
I thought I’d made some very strong bids, but to my disappointment I only came away with one coin. I was the dreaded underbidder on 3 others. Congrats to the winners. Some bidders really, really, really wanted the coins they were after. That’s how to play the game.
Here’s my new coin. One of the more common dates in the series in a common circulated grade……but a gorgeous example of the type in very nice “workhorse” condition. Right in my wheelhouse.

20 of my SLQs are in slabs, and 17 are raw, in an album. I would be happy to take a photo of all, but it would not be a "nice, neat" photo.
I was always an album collector; I resisted getting many slabbed coins until I started wading a bit deeper into the pool, and was uncomfortable with spending real money on raw coins bought over the internet. This set has a LOT of coins that are (to me) quite expensive in higher grades, so most of my SLQs are encapsulated.

I'd LOVE to see a completed set of SLQs... not something you see every day! Even a "virtual album" would be super cool... IMHO...

Here it is. It's not a fabulous collection, other than the 1916 (which represents almost 60% of the total value of the set); the rest of the key dates/semi-key dates are not high grade. But It is complete, and I do like it!
I put silver Washington quarters in album slots representing the encapsulated coins.

Purchased these two proof sets from EBay last week. Expecting delivery this Wednesday to Friday.
Needless to say the 1959 half intrigues me, as under the haze it appears to have fully frosted devices on both sides. Removing the haze from that half dollar may make a fantastic early Christmas present.

Thanks! It is a very good feeling; that's a very tough set.
Not to be pedantic, but I want to say one little thing about feeling "proud" about something like this. I feel that we can be proud of making good choices--picking good coins, based on our knowledge and skill, not just the slab. I feel that we can make good choices about what constitutes a "set" for our individual purposes, and feel good about following through. And it is, of course, important not to overspend on a hobby.
But feeling "pride" at having enough money to buy a coin like my 1916 SLQ is not, IMO, appropriate; "gratitude" comes to my mind more readily. Yes, my wife and I were financial aid kids in college (and lots of school after college), working two jobs each, getting lots of straight aid, and borrowing lots of money--nobody "gave" us the financial wherewithal we now have, But neither did anybody, or bad luck, throw any roadblocks at us; we have worked very hard to get where we are, but we have been extremely fortunate every step of the way, that nothing bad has happened to us.
I feel wonderful when I get a coin like the this SLQ, but "grateful" is a far better descriptor, to me, than "proud."

I hope it dips well. '59 Franklins are tough in cam, especially in DCam which I believe your coin has a shot at. Hoping the digs/scratches on the bell are on the holder!
