Last Penny Auction
Here's an article from USA Today stating the last 5 cents made, specially privy marked, will be auctioned "in the future." Another article I saw in a FB group mentioned GC handling the sale on December 7. It's possible the USA Today article was written before the GC deal was struck, assuming the GC story is legit. @ianrussell ?

It's great that they are doing this but could have expanded it. Look how well received the Last Type 1 and First Type 2 Silver Eagles were received. That auction went very well.

I thought that the boss (director of the mint) was a collector of coins. They could have cased it, to hold it, and display it. That is an underwhelming event.

Would it be difficult to fake a privy mark on a cent that could fool anyone but a numismatist?0 -
Will the holders containing the last cents be signed by the individuals whose fingerprints are on them? Who needs privy marks when you have fingerprints!

This is the guy in every organization who's the only one that always knows what's going on, but when he brings up any problems to management, they always ignore his concerns. So instead of trying to fix things anymore, he just watches everything burn down.

Say what you want but it is an extremely significant coin representing the end of the Cent. There will be a fight to win this one. Even to own one of the last 5 ever minted. So much history there. Best of luck to all those that bid. The Type 1/Type 2 Silver Eagle auction was outstanding. This will also turn out that way.

WayneIt should be holdered identifying the people that added those juicy fingerprints. I'm hoping the prints were washed away after the ceremony. That's going to be an ugly coin in 10-20 years if not.

You would have thought that they could have found a pair of gloves. Those fingerprints will only get worse in the future. Somebody will pay more for this foolishness than they would for a nice Chain cent.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?6 -

I think $2M is the over-under. I know that sounds crazy, but think about this. Anyone wanting a "complete" Lincoln set will need this coin and there are plenty of folks who can play at this level. Comparatively, 1913 nickels, 1894-s dimes are more common, not business strikes, and so on. There's simply nothing like this in 20-21st century numismatics. The fact that they are already "circulated" (just kidding) kinda adds to the drama of the story. I'm interested in everyone's guesses...

I would love to own a “last day” coin. In my opinion they should have set every coin minted the last day aside for special grading/labeling.

I expect somebody will spend a lot on the last strike, but it really is not necessary or sufficient for a complete Lincoln set to have the last one struck, I mean there is no first one struck for wheats, memorials, or shields. Personally, I would much rather have a 1958 DDO or an Eid Mar.

The last few should have been copper struck in the fashion of proofs and handled with gloves. It looks more like a circus than a meaningful ceremony. Par for the course these days.

Does anyone know when they're planning on auctioning it? Likely being sent to our host first?
The way things are going, I'm thinking the longer they wait the higher the price will be.
Although next year around July 4th seems like a good time to auction it away...for the first time...Coins are Neato!
