Complete 1890 Mint Set

The last coin just arrived which was ironically the quarter. Here's the entire 18 piece set. For more detailed pictures, most of the coins are in the "Coins of 1890" thread.

Some observations:
The Philadelphia gold is far more scarce than the Carson City gold but much cheaper.
Any of the gold coins in 63 or better, except the quarter eagle, are very rare.
The 1890-cc $20 is one third the cost of the entire set.
The silver dollars are scarce, as far as Morgans go, in 65 and rare in 66.
The half and quarter are common in 65 and 66 within the context of the 1890 coinage.
The smaller denomination are scarce in 65 and 66 within their respective series, especially the cent and nickel.
The coinage of 1890 was still limited, especially the smaller denominations of silver, due to the ongoing output of Morgan dollars. That would change starting in 1891, with a full slate of minor silver being minted in 1892 along with the design change.
1890 represents the first year of the standard 10 denomination coinage line up which would continue until the 1933 elimination of gold. From 1792-1848 there were 10 standard denominations and starting in 1849 with the addition of the gold dollar, there were several denominations added or eliminated such as 2c, 3c, 20c etc. The 3c nickel, gold dollars, and gold $3 pieces were eliminated from the line up in 1889. The 1890-1933 10 denominations differed from the 1792-1848 line up by eliminating the half cent and adding a double eagle, although the 5c coin is obviously made of nickel now instead of silver.
Long term goals:
Upgrade the gold to a minimum of 62 across the board and probably 63 for the quarter eagle and 90-s $20. Beyond that, it's probably going to be too expensive to upgrade further, especially the $10's, and $20's.
Upgrade the cent to 65 red and the Philadelphia dime and half to 65.
I'll probably add a DMPL Morgan and another coin to round it out as a box of 20.

CAC loves the Fairmont coins. There's a Fairmont 63CAC Carson City half eagle floating around out there but I don't have the funds for it right now.

I wanted a set that included seated coins, Carson City (I visited there this year), and could be completed in mint state with my budget. That's 1890.
Great looking set and impressive accomplishment for all those coins and in their lofty grades. Something surely to be proud of.

PL halves from 1879-1890 are not scarce. I used to have one. Very few dimes, quarters and halves were made these years at the Philadelphia int and almost none of them circulated. The only problem with the PL halves is that the PL makes the contact marks more apparent.

Total of 8 graded across all grades seems pretty scarce.

Congratulations on a great set.
After thinking about it, I realized the 20th coin needs to be the 64PL half if I upgrade it to 65.
So, my long term upgrades would be:
1c to 65 red
10c Philly to 65
50c to 65
$1-cc to 65
The Philly Morgan is my least favorite coin. I really dislike the toning. I would get another 65 and do a straight replacement if I can find one I like.
All the non gold would be 65 (at least) and I would keep the 64PL half and get a DMPL Morgan to round out the box of 20.
Also, upgrade all gold to 62-63 as mentioned above.

No, I'm working on a 1967 world coinage collection now. I'll be upgrading this set periodically though.
Not really. I've seen many of these coins over the years and quite a few of them were PL. It could be that many of these coins were not sent in before the PL designation came about. That, or I don't know if there's a premium for a PL designation of these coins. Personally, I wouldn't pay it, but that's just me, The PL coins tend to highlight contact marks on surfaces.
