I've gotten more upgrades out of ICG holders than any other, even the soap bars.

Older holders give more confidence of a coin's stability. My collection is PCGS. Rattlers are different size/geometry than other PCGS holders.

For me its the modern gold shield. I like the way Morgan's look in PCGS gold shield holder but I also like the ANACS soap bar holders.
Given the choice I would pick the gold shield.

As far as the slab only, I like the SEGS slab. Very sturdy and a label is on the top of the slab so you can see what coin it holds while in a slab box.

    I’m also a fan.

This is my favorite NGC holder without a doubt.

Almost 90% of my collection is in PCGS gold shield holders with the NFC chip. Everything from copper to gold looks great in them. Plus the benefit of added security and TrueViews make it a trifecta in my opinion.

@ELVIS1 . I thought the question pertained to which slabs do you prefer to keep your coins in. If the question is which slabs do you buy because you can get them up graded then ICG rules. Like taking candy from babies; have found numerous coins undergraded and underpriced; a hard combo to find. james

You are 100% correct. I prefer my coin in one of the smaller holders like soap bars or rattlers but I always seem to go out of my way to hold an ICG.

My favorite is the modern PCGS slab after the doilies and the larger slabs that felt like they were going to break in your hand. If you want to get more specific, I like the Old Green Label PCGS slab because the grading was often more conservative.

I never like the rattler slab because the coin often rattled. I cracked a few coins out solely because of that. I wasn’t crazy. I got upgrades when I resubmitted them. Going from MS-63 to 65 was pretty good in one case. :)

Since those are the only options, I voted ANACS soapbar holder... followed closely by the NGC fattie. I liked the ANACS holders because they fit virtually every coin I'm interested in owning, and they fit in a standard 2x2 flip box. Currently, I like the modern PCGS slab with the TV (when the TV's look ok)...

From the @Conder101 thread but not listed in the PCGS Museum of holders:

PCGS 2 This was the first attempt by PCGS to increase the security of their slabs. This is a two piece slab. The center part is the same small "rattler" shell seen on PCGS 1 (note the four alignment pins in the corners around the coin). The second part is a plastic border that wraps around the edge of the slab and forms the raised lip that now lets the slabs stack and interlock. Other security measures taken were the addition of a barcode to the front label and a hologram to the back label. This was also the last variety that did not have the companies initials on the front label. The front label is off white with a green tinge to it. This faint green is formed by thousands of tiny green dots that are only visible under magnification. This variety was used in Oct and Nov of 1989.

--- it matches the current PCGS 2.1 except it doesn't have PCGS on the front. Much like what @TomB said.

Based on JUST the slab, and not any coins inside, I like the ACG slab, and their licensee's slabs (i.e. Numex). The Gen1-Gen2 ANACS slabs and [clean] Tulving slabs are a close second. While the SEGS slab's aesthetic is just okay to me, I do like the top label feature and how indestructible they are.

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

If we’re just talking about the physical slabs themselves, and not the grading or reputations or marketability, I liked the SEGS capsules the best.

Current generation PCGS slabs and current CACG slabs are at the top of my list. PCGS feels better in hand, CACG has the better laid out label. The PCGS Ancients label shows promise for a move in the right direction with the rest of their labels. High information density and good legibility. The earliest generation slabs aren't particularly attractive, and I don't like rattlers. The PCGS green label generation 3.1 is the earliest PCGS one I like. The ANACS hotel soap holders will tone coins near the label.

There seems to be a nice percentage of soap bar lovers here. I'm sure it's been discussed here before but you gotta ask yourself why ANACS wouldn't bring them back. You would think it might be a good business decision. I would submit coins for some new small soap bar slabs. I know, I would be buying the holder...........you know the rest! 🤣 😉

Started seriously collecting certified coins in or around 1989/1990, so the bulk of my collection in certified coins were PCGS original green holders, OGH. Still like the look and feel of that style holder. Also prefer the sturdiness of the PCGS gold shield holders.
