September Pickups...

I won this 1971 Roberto Clemente PSA-8.5 tonight on 4SC. I have always liked this card with Clemente looking down the barrel of his bat...and the Pirate uniform worn during the 1970s. Remember the Reds and Pirates battling for the National Pennant in 1970, 1972 (game #5 and Clemente’s last game) and 1975. This card has passed MBA Diamond Candidate test…

Very nice Bob! I had a lower grade OPC version for many years. Sold it a few years ago. Probably will regret log term, but yours is a great example! <3

    Thank you Mintonlypls.

Question for you or any other poster - I have noticed that some posters black out the cert number when they post a photo of a card. What's the reason for that? Does it really matter if someone knows the cert number?

Nice team card! I see Yogi in there...cannot locate the Mick, Roger or Whitey.

Thanks - It does seem the team cards from the 1970's were much easier to pick out players than in this card!

The coupon from a candy store places the gum at around 1949 or so.

I was happy to pick this up - comes with the original box to the seller - one thing I don't get? 1 piece for a penny and 5 pieces for a nickel? Why not "6" for a nickel so there's an incentive?

It's rare that I've ever seen a coupon from this item.

Very cool. I own one of these as well, complete with box and coupon. I had a second one but sold it, of course, and the take was $400 sometime in the late 90s. I'm certain these displays are much more valuable now.

Thanx. I picked this up on eBay for $361 - overall I was satisfied with the buy. Prices historically are all over the place. So, I agree; more valuable today.

Keith Jr and I went and while it is getting crowded and corporate we enjoy it every year. Picked up a Koufax rookie, 60 Mantle, Bench rookie, and a 56 Jackie. Still looking for a centered Jordan RC in 8/8.5 and an upgrade to add for my 56 Mantle.

  • Love that card - nice pickup!

For some reason I've had better luck with the 84 Donruss set getting higher grades. Maybe the white border. Maybe just a better print run. Not really sure.

I like the 84 set too even if there aren't any huge rookies. I just hate all those Active Leader cards. Those things are the worst. It's a fun year to rip though. I really like the Rickey card in 84.

Agree on the 84 Donruss being a set where you can get more Mint to Gem Mint cards. Think you are right about the white borders vs. 85 and 86 and then the card stock is stronger vs. Topps from the 80s. I feel like the centering can be pretty nice on a lot of them and I probably have 50 or so that have a shot at being 10s but a lot of the commons and semistars with high POPs may sell for 15 to 20 bucks which makes it tough to grade them. My Mattingly and Strawberry cards were ridiculously off center. My Joe Carter and a lot of stars just not Gem Mint either.

I saw blowout offering 5k for the ball and thought that was funny. Wonder what it would auction for..

I haven't posted in awhile. PSA subs have been slow but I will inject some basketball into this thread.

Just got back my last ever sub from PSA. I was expecting to be disappointed and boy did they ever deliver. No idea how all 4 of these are 7s, the Price in particular is close flawless. I’m guessing AI picked up something on the surface but come on, they just slapped 7s on all 4 of these.

Didn’t expect dimes but the amount of 7s I got in this order of mostly modern was a bit shocking.

I see corner issues that I think warrant a 7.
(upper/lower right front of the last 2, and on upper back corners of the 2nd one.)
The Price card is better, but the back shows some corner issues. Maybe an 8 would be more appropriate.

The Kane has an obvious touch, but the others have always been 8/9s. Unless a card has to be perfect to be an 8 and getting a 10 is just dice roll.

I have the Price in hand, it is perfectly centred and has no corner issues

Take a look at the Clemente above, that is a 7, you feel these present similar?

Again, not suggesting there are tens but if they are 7s I have no idea what a 9 is anymore.

Anyways, doesn’t really matter, I knew what I was getting in to and shouldn’t have submitted, and won’t again. Its clearly a lottery now and I’m not a gambler.

I didn’t want to be the first to mention that bottom left corner on that 69 Clemente. They can’t all be home runs.

  • 80sOPC80sOPC Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭✭✭

To be clear I wasn’t knocking the Clemente, simply believe that a card shouldn’t have to be perfect to get an 8 or 9. A 7 can have multiple issues - if you have to zoom way in to find a small fault, it’s probably better then a 7, or what is the point of the 8/9 grades?
