Do you like the old small ANACS holders?

Walkerguy21DWalkerguy21D Posts: 11,712 ✭✭✭✭✭

I do, that’s why this dealer’s table caught my eye at the monthly Melbourne show today.
And mostly all pre-1900 type and foreign coins. I said it was like going back 40 years.
He also had cases older NGC and PCGS as well.

I especially like the ones without the barcode.
    So sleak and minimal.

I love them. Best holder ever IMO.

I recently chatted with a few dealers at a coin show, and they both said there was a huge following for nice coins in the soap bar holders.

Absolutely, YES! I liked them because I could still fit the slab into a 2x2 box with the lid left off (or set the box in the lid). I felt it was convenient because I could use the slabbed coins as "bookmarkers" for the coins in 2x2's and I didn't need a larger box to hold them. I haven't tried crossing any old soapbox ANACS holders but my experience in comparing some of the material I typically collect (Early Copper) with how the EAC auction card reads is that ANACS coins were typically 5-10 points over... again, not sure how this would translate into current PCGS standards for early copper, but PCGS seems to have gotten pretty picky in this venue as I'm sure you know...

Here's an old soapbox 1855 Upright 5's ANACS-35 that Bob Grellman had at VF30...

Every US coin will fit in the small ANACS slab with the exception of the very expensive $50 gold slugs and the huge five-ounce silver America the Beautiful coins commonly called pucks which have always required an oversized slab. The only problem with a smaller slab is there may not be enough room for all the stickers.

I figured out who he was, and he recognized me, after a bit. He hadn’t set up for over 10 years, he said, and I can believe it. Almost all of his PCGS and NGC slabs were without prongs.
A lot of pretty cool coins, mostly seated and bust, and a sprinkling of better date Morgans, like three ‘93Ss. No CAC stickers or new holders. He also said he had quite a few more, but didn’t have enough cases, but said he’d bring them to the show in September.

The only problem was, and I heard the same gripe around the floor about him, was that he was pricing everything at CoinFacts prices, or higher. Granted at FUN this was kind of the norm, but these guys are used to getting coins at Bid or lower. He wasn’t offering the dealers any more breaks than the rest of us.

I usually just call them "small ANACS slab" but by using either name, coin people know what you are referring to.

I don't much care for them. They're the proverbial black sheep of slab holders imo.

@TimNH - These threads might help you as well. Not sure exactly what your requirements are but there are generic boxes I use that hold just about every slab size.

Keep in mind that back in the day (early to mid 1990s), ANACs was the only TPG that recognized and labeled various varieties.

Back when I had probably 40 of the soap bar slabs I purchased an Eagle ANACs 21 holder box since I also didn't like how they sat in the PCGS and NGC boxes. Unfortunately a rubber band melted on the box.

My memory is not good enough; but I have small foam rectangles that I use to store my Small Anac holders in the pages of my Eagle Brand Slab albums. I see the name Eagle on the lid of that box. Perhaps they offer those foam spacers seperately. James
