PCGS Slabbed Type Set, no one cares . . . TOO EXPENSIVE, BUT I GOT IT ANYWAY . . .
I've been putting together a PCGS Type Set and no one I know cares. I want to share it with somebody. Are you guys okay if I start posting some pictures here?
My set will include coins issued for circulation, so no proof coins or regular issue gold or $50 dollar gold coins. I currently have 64 coins with 79 left to get. Why so many in my set? I usually get carried away . . . 116 regular issue coins (less 12 I cannot afford), 8 commemorative coins (early Quarter, Half, Dollar, Gold Dollar, Gold $2.50, current Half, Dollar, $5 Gold), 16 Blank Planchets (one each), 2 Medals (one early one current), 14 Foreign/US issues (Hawaii and Philippines). 1 error coin. If any one want a breakdown, just let me know.

I have completed a U.S. type set from the half cent to all of the old commemorative coins up until the mid 1980s. I have the modern type coins, but they aren’t certified. They are posted on the NGC registry. It’s a long slog, but if you enjoy it, why let other people’s disinterest stop you? Unlike you, I like Proof coins and buy them whenever I can.
The toughest part are the type coins from 1793 to 1807. Good luck getting all of those in MS-64. I hoped for AU-58, but fell short with grades as low as Fine-15 for the 1796-7 half dollar. All of the rest are in higher grades. It took me about 50 years.
Stick with it! You will be quite pleased when you complete it.

Unless you're talking to a collector most people eyes glaze over when talking about a set. I show folks my Franklin set and they say "that's nice, you have every year and mint, oh sweet". Then start getting into FBL, die pairs, Bugs Bunny, toning, strink, erc. and their mind wanders.

Yes, please post your set! Great first coin and one of my all time favorites. I still have the type one I purchased in the early 1970's from a local jewelry store. I had to beg the gut to sell it to me. It is in an old green holder graded 62 full head and CAC. And ditto to Catbert. LOL!

Todd, this is good productive info for folks that are just beginning to experience the "joys" of coin photography. One technique I advocate: put the phone on top of a clear drinking glass. My theory is that it's stable and just about right-sized for a phone to rest upon, it allows light to flow but, being circular, doesn't create a reflective flat surface adjacent to the subject coin, and finally, everyone has one! :-)

He inferred I collected partly or mostly for "portfolio diversification" or "investment" when I don't and never did. When she saw the book contents, her response and I quote was "you need to get a life".

What we have seen so far is really fascinating and I hope to see more.
My photo trick is to take a new roll of toilet paper and use that as a phone stand. Set the roll on the flat edge and put the phone on the top flat edge with the lens hanging over the side. The width of a roll is just about the closest focus distance and you can zoom in until the coin is nicely framed. Then you can use the cropping function to get rid of any part of the photo outside the coin image.
I like the white of the TP roll because it helps reflect white light. Presumably the lighting is coming from the 10:00 and 2:00 positions; reflections off the white TP roll will throw light in the opposite direction and reduce shadows, without being so bright that it washes out the surface texture you want to capture.

I agree with Todd here - it's a winner. It is the plentiful LM-4 (rarity 1) but it has a feature that I like: the diagonal bisecting die crack. It goes from top of cap, thru E in LIBERTY, runs behind the first curl, into the field from where chin and neck meet, thru the bust, and down to the rim at about 7 o'clock. Super cool. I have a pretty late one that took me a long time to find: https://www.cacgrading.com/cert/85521235
On the reverse you see the N is filled. This is the usual state. Early ones, I believe, don't have the filled N but I don't have one of those.
PS (so I don't give the wrong impression) - those cracks are not what we attribute the coin by... they're just cool add-ons. The LM-4 is struck from Obverse 1 (star 7 points to top of headband) and Reverse Z (scroll ends under center of M).

For my next trick . . . I tend to get carried away and included several different categories as part of my type set. I have a representative error coin, a chopmarked coin, blank planchets (working on getting one of each domination), a modern medal (do not have an early one yet), foreign coins minted by the US (Philippines and Hawaii). It'a okay, call me crazy.

Absolutely not. My type set is very broad as well. I think in terms of show-and-tell.
For my Morgan’s I have added a toner, a DMPL, the ‘21, a CC. I have a shipwreck-recovered half. I added the only NO 3 cent piece, all the Liberty $5 mint marks, the three ‘61-O halves minted by the US, LA, and the CSA. To name just a few.1 -

Coin collecting is a personal objective. I do not care if anyone else that I know approves or dis-sapproves or just don't care. I do not care if everyone else collects stamps or guns or whatever they want. You could join a local coin club and they may appreciate what you have done. I collect coins to please myself-no one else.
You have some very nice coins there! I would be proud to own any one of them.

In our coin club we had a member who disliked the "show and tell" phrase when members wanted to share what they had so by agreement it was changed to "presentations", though some wondered what that was about. "Sandy" likes to bring various sets in books he's assembled that are much appreciated for his "presentations".
From my experience, it is hard to sell complete proof sets say 1939-42 all certified. It's much easier to sell a coin at a time.
