I would spend the entire $100,000 on an 1848 CAL. $2.50 in PCGS/CAC.

I forgot about Gorbrecht dollars. Can I have a second $100,000? James

It would be fun to curiously investigate the possibilities of purchasing a 1964-D Peace dollar for $100,000. Despite the coin being worth many multiples of that on the legal open market, the law would prohibit that exposure and auction price potential. Not many people would be willing to spend a significant amount of money at the risk of government confiscation.

I’d buy a 1795 small eagle Draped Bust dollar in MS 62.

I’d be tempted to go for an NE shilling. Simple and historic.

    Skier,

that 1870-cc half eagle in 45+ was the nicest 70-cc half eagle I have ever seen for the grade, totally original superb eye-appeal. I bid on that up to 9ok when it sold at auction which was well beyond what I probably could afford, but I would have figured out something to sell to cover the diff. didnt matter went well above that,

No wonder, winter bought it and is now selling it or for a customer who originally bought it

Seems like the best 1793 Lib Cap cent I could find for that price would do. Problem is finding one 😂

Saw this earlier in the week and considered it a little this morning waiting for the PO call desk to open.

I think I'd stick with coins I have collected, love and know.

I might try to finish the year set (and maybe my favorite overdate) for the Draped Bust Large Eagle Half Dollars in +/- AU53

Maybe a AU+ Flowing Hair Half Dollar (1795)

Maybe grab a couple of the tougher CBH's I don't have yet in 55/58

Probably another Draped and Capped Bust coin or two (Dime, Quarter and/or Half) in ChAU, depending

Mint state examples of all the keys to the 20th century sets I collect and the major varities! With that much money, I bet I could make quite a collection!!!

More of what I already buy, except that I'd also attempt to acquire the coins I want through the few dealers who might be able to find it from the collectors who currently own it.

If I were to buy anything US, maybe the common date US Assay $20 territorial gold in AU with good color and strike. That's somewhere in the vicinity of $20K last I checked.

Considering the coin sold for $108k in 4/22 and $122k last week it really didn’t go up that much in price considering we’re in a strong market for PQ CAC coins. If the coin was consigned to DW the original buyer broke even but for three years was the custodian of a great coin. I don’t know how DW conducts his business but sitting on a $108k coin for three years is probably something he doesn’t do or if he does not very often.

Doug represented me on the coin at auction, and I sold it back through him. I built a 110 piece Carson City set (effectively complete), where most of the coins were P45CAC. You are correct that it wasn’t a big financial home run, but it was one of the last coins that I held on to. I truly liked it, but it was time to move it to a different home.

Key and semi-key dates in mainstream penny, nickel and dime series. XF-40 and better condition coins but settle for nice VF if higher grades not available. Some uncs but no spend an arm and a leg to acquire. When can I expect to see the check for $100K so I can get started in this endeavour? :|

You can get a nice one in the 12-14 range, 20+ pits you in UNC territory with those. A very good value still imo, I’m surprised these have stayed reasonable over the past few years.

I’d go for a gold coins pre-1800 atleast vf20 graded. An xf-au sampling of Charlotte and Dahlonega gold. And maybe top it off with a gem grade proof trade dollar that is toned and CAC’d. Or if all else fails simply buy as many insane toned pr66 and pr67 barber quarters and proof seated dimes that are CAC’d until I run thru the $100k.

    Chance favors the prepared mind.
