And. . . PCGS is correct.
If it is your coin and you are so inclined I'd give it the nickname, "NothingBisonBurger"
How the hell is that valued at $8?

Welcome to the forum. What do you see that you think is different than a normal nickel? I see the reverse streaks of toning but that is "a nothing burger" to the collector.
Do you see something different?

thanks for explaining how this happens at the mint.
I never would have believed it would grade had it not come from a mint bag.
I wonder if a more precise term for this toning is variegated?
variegated amber patination

the bison buffs are going to stampede off a cliff for this bisected bison!
I will list it as NOT speared to catch the eyes of bovines looking for the $300 speared bison variety
interesting comment from PCGS:JH in price guide:
The coins poor condition can be blamed mainly on the coin planchets in which they were struck, since the planchets usually contained large die gouges, nicks and scratches. Other times the coins display an uneven color and luster, which were probably caused by incorrectly mixing the different metal alloys used to produce the planchets.

Ok
It is very common on coins in circulation and not uncommon on coins from the Mint. There are numerous chemicals used in the minting process. If any of them survive the wash, you can get toning streaks.
I see more tuition in your future if that is the way you respond to getting three correct answer to a question you asked.

In my hunt for the Great Speared Tatanka, I also found 2 bisons with "uneven luster" on obverse
as foretold by the Venerable One- PCGS:jh above.
I must have missed the keelboat because I have not seen this "uneven luster" before either.
I didnt find them as interesting as the Toned Tatanka but then he whispered "uneven luster" was
"probably caused by incorrectly mixing the different metal alloys used to produce the planchets"
I would have guessed The Mint had perfected the mixing of Nickel alloys for mass produced coins by 2005.

PCGS price guide. It's more like a $2 coin
What do you think it is?

bob
I have never seen streaks of toning like that on any coin.
This from a mint sewn bag of 1000 and other 999 were not streaked at all.
I've seen thousands. It's usually due to a foreign substance on the coin. It's not related to the striking of the coin.
As "tuition" goes, that was pretty cheap. In the future, maybe ask before you send it in.
A foreign substance post strike but pre bag?

Ya i will be sure to ask jmlanzaf b4 pcgs next time.
While on this westward journey, any thoughts on PL designation of peace/handshake nickel? Low pop.

It is not uncommon. I have seen it from mint rolls and bags. It is the wash not being removed.

give me the url to where JH wrote this
Yes JH references poorly struck.coins but never seen him reference large die gouges...
Seems to be a stretch
Especially if the die gorges are on the planchets... shouldn't they be either on the struck coins or on the dies?
