one coin show a year for me and this will be the one. I have driven through OK City on my way to Fort Lostinthewoods, MO, but never stopped. Do they have a Gibson's across the street?

I was just reviewing this thread and it snapped: "Fort Leonard Wood." My son, who was a combat medic in the Army Guard (and did a year in Iraq, much to the detriment of his father's hairline), spent some time there! Dang, that was almost 20 years ago...

The later date is the first week of school - a big deal when you have kids in elementary school. Really wish they had kept the prior years’ schedule of earlier in August. OKC location rules out a quick day trip.

Sent in my registration today. It might be my only chance to visit an Oklahoma ANA this lifetime.

  • Dang. 5 hours away, that's not too much of an issue, if I stay overnight. Other than the obvious, (tons of coins to look at and maybe buy) what else is there that is a 'must see" in that area or Little Rock to OKC corridor?

  • TrampTramp Posts: 737 ✭✭✭✭✭

Registered and room reserved. Now I just need to win the lottery to buy all the coins I'm searching for. Lol

Looking forward to seeing dealers and their inventory that may not normally attend other shows.

Other sites to see on the way or way back: In Bartlesville you have Woolaroc which is the old Frank Phillips (of Phillips 66 fame) ranch with a herd of bison. A detour to the Ouachita Mountains in SE Oklahoma brings you to Robber's Cave State Park. It’s a purported Jesse James hideout which I never believed. But it hosts some of the best hiking trails mixed in with the caves, huge boulders and beginner rock climbing.

When OKC was brought up for the ANA Show, I started thinking about what options the family would have if not going to the show each day. I made this list but few are walking distance from the show and probably 100 degree weather.

These should be easy to Google and get an idea where they are in relation to the show.

    Myriad Gardens
    Bricktown Canel Ferry
Remington Park Race Track and Casino.
    OKANA Hotel Water Park.
    National Cowboy Western Museum.
OKC Zoo and the Omniplex Museum. They are close to each other.
    The OKC Bombing Memorial.

I will probably walk over to the American Banjo Museum. https://americanbanjomuseum.com/
The 99s Museum of Women Pilots is at the airport https://www.museumofwomenpilots.org/ I visited years ago, well worth it.

No. I rarely go to ANA shows unless they are in my immediate area. I much prefer FUN.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I did register since I'm an ANA member; gives me free daily access. Otherwise it's $10 per day to access. Access is free to public only on Saturday per website. https://www.money.org/worldsfairofmoney/

Sadly ANA membership has always struggled to gain a membership of 30K or more over 50 states.
pretty small of an organizational membership. Are we dying? Smaller venues /cities may be more appropriate for us.
Omaha, NE. was always the home of some very well known collectors but its use as an ANA site has been forgotten in our history. OKC was probably a good choice.

is ana all over social media to get the young crowd in?

For a bit, looked like I wasn't going to make this show but yesterday we booked our flights and hotel!

While the show is the draw for me, we plan to look for other activities in the neighborhood. Hoping to find a trivia pub during our stay.

My son ask to go on one of the days. His first time to a large coin show.
He is going to freak when he walks in the door.

Be sure to give your son plenty of cash, some signed checks and your credit card before he sets out on his own. But save $20 for yourself in case you want a soda and a hotdog.😉

Seems like a lot 6 weeks out. Especially at the upper end. How does it compare to past WFOMs, and do they even have the same size floor plan as in years past, or did they plan for reduced demand by reducing the size of the floor?

While tables are still available it certainly looks as if collectors will attend. The hotel room blocks are a compete sell out. Scarsdale Coin will be there no matter what and look forward as always to seeing old friends and meeting new ones!

The one where the show is in the beginning of August, as it used to be. Plus, even then, I miscounted by two weeks.

    Sorry, you're right. 10 weeks, not 6.

I'll be sure to post the same question this time next month. I'm sure the numbers won't change that much. My other question about the size of the show floor was not based on time. Any response to that, or just to my faulty calendar?

The Exhibit Hall at the OKC Convention Center is 200,730 sq. ft. I have no idea, nor do I care how that compares to previous show venues. You wouldn't care either except you want this show to be a failure so badly, just because it is being held in a place you don't like for some bizarre reason. At any rate I hope you can attend, maybe we can change your mind about Oklahoma. I also hope you have the opportunity to see an NBA Championship Trophy while you're here. Go THUNDER!

I don't "want" anything. I just think it was a mistake to have it there. Once the decision was made, I truly wish them nothing but the best.

I was just asking a question. Not about the square footage of the hall, but about the number of booths they set up, given how many they still have available, at all price points.

No need to change my mind about OKC. I'm sure it's lovely.

Just a bit off the beaten path for me. And, too expensive and too much of a PITA for me to get to to justify the trip.

Given that I live in a major population center, I know I am not alone, which is the only reason I think it was a mistake. Not because I have anything against OKC. Or the Thunder, who truly do appear to be a bit overrated right now.

The Omni ANA block is sold out Monday to Thursday, but there are still (pricey) rooms available at Omni and Fairfield if you book through Expedia. There are plenty of cheaper rooms half a mile away at Skirvin, Colcord, and other decent hotels.

As for travel, Southwest has connections through Phoenix, Denver and Midway if you need a widebody. Delta has connections from SLC, MSP, ATL and American has connections from DFW, ORD, CLT.

It's a bad location for the value tier dealers who won't have a local collector base to draw upon. but it hardly matters if you plan to stay several days.

I haven't been to OKC since the Devon Tower was completed, but the location is pleasant with a large park, good restaurants, and entertainment options.

Attendance will be down, especially from the Northeast, but it is hardly worth the complaining from certain quarters. It's a free market and people are welcome to attend a busy FUN, a less busy Baltimore, or empty newcomer shows instead.
