Well, I’ve finally finished my AU/MS date set of Classic Cents!

This 1812 Small Date cent at long last finished my Date Set of Classic Cents and I’m pretty stoked. I bought it from David Lawrence Rare Coins last week in Schaumburg and definitely like it. All of the obverse luster is real and prevalent, surrounding all of the devices. The reverse less so but still lustrous. It came in a PCGS MS63 old blue “Coin/Series” holder and the poor thing looked like it had never been brushed, with what might have been a very old haze of PVC residue on the reverse but no green corrosion. Being the new owner, I took the liberty of submitting it to PCGS for restoration. I wrote ATTN: Gordon Wrubel at the top and noted that I was looking for a very light brush to simply remove surface contaminants and boldly wrote “NO HARSH BRUSHING” below. Basically a 30 second job. I don’t have the coin back yet but here is the true-view which I think is quite nice:

I should be able to list post the entire set of pics but for now here’s a link:

Three coins to go before I finish the whole variety set. The 10/9 and the 1812 LD will be easy. I still haven’t ever even seen an 11/0 that I want in my set, but the day may come.

Wow, super nice coin! I collected large cents back in the day and Classics are tough coins to find nice. You should try for the whole 19 piece die variety set.

Very nice Classic Large Cent. This is my favorite series of U.S. coins. Don't own one because I had a pre 1815 copper develop PVC in holder 8 years after I bought it. If it's not in an OGH, I'm not buying. It's too bad, but I don't want to risk that happening again.

Congratulations! Years ago I completed nice sets of middle and late date LCs, but never got into the early dates. I have been thinking about getting a few for type, and something like your nice 1812 is what I'd be looking for.

I love it and I love this series. These coins are all a beast to find with nice surfaces, regardless of the grade. You have done a terrific job of a Herculean undertaking.

The 1809 really looks like this:

And the 1811 really looks like this:

I haven’t tried the 1811 but I believe it has been. I’m not in love with it from a quality for the grade standpoint but it is still a very nice 1811.

The 1809 is one of the nicest I have seen, but JA for some reason feels the reverse is too dark and he called it “over-brushed” (just the reverse) with a gold-CAC obverse (his spoken words to me). It’s in an OGH and it has been called flat under-graded by virtually every dealer that has seen it. It has a very high quality planchet (especially for the date) and is very EDS with an almost proof-like appearance. The obverse looks gorgeous and has “buy me!” written all over it. I believe the reverse got to be that color by sitting on or in an envelope for a very long time and is completely natural in spite of being dark. It’s okay to disagree.

Wow... THAT's quite the undertaking! ...and all gorgeous coins. I especially like your 1809... a super tough coin to find nice!

Great collection. I just picked up the 1812 Small Date(not nearly as nice as yours). the 10, 11, 12 are pretty hard to find at a reasonable amount for above VF. They are so nice to hold in hand though. Congratulations on a very nice achievement.

I am envious. The best I have is an AU-58. I would like to find an 1809 in Choice VF.
