    JUXTAPOSITING YESTERDAY'S PAINTINGS WITH TODAY'S PHOTOS

    Midway between the sunset lit waters of Cook Inlet with its Mount Susitna and the Chugach Range lies the city of Anchorage with its Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery. There is the final resting place of Sydney Laurence and his also artist wife Jeanne.

    In the photos below are scenes painted by Sydney Laurence of Cook Inlet with its Mount Susitna and the Chugach Range. Juxtapositioned with them are my photos of the sunset lit waters of Cook Inlet with its Mount Susitna and the Chugach Range.

    Of somewhat added interest is a painting that hangs in my office of the same subject as included in Jeanne Laurence's book "My Life with Sydney Laurence." Apparently both were copied from an original by Sydney Laurence. Its single color focus is representative of the Tonalism artistic style that Sydney Laurence embraced in some of his work.

    It is somewhat poetic that in the first photo at the Memorial Park the snow was falling yesterday on the sculpture of Mount McKinley (a favorite subject of Sydney Laurence) atop the headstone. The second photo is of the largest of his paintings of Mount McKinley at the Anchorage Museum in which I have included a bench to add perspective as to its size.

    Yesterday I discovered a new vantage point from which to view the Chugach Mountains from Anchorage. Located at the end of Orca, a dead end street on a bluff just south of Anchorage's Pioneer Merril Field Airport and despite overlooking the neighborhood I had once resided in as a child - it was a first time discovery.

    Notably this vantage point view of the Chugach Mountains is surprisingly similar to that seen by Sydney Laurence when he painted the Chugach Mountains from a location at Spenard and Fireweed Lane.

    Pictured first is Sydney Laurence's painting of the Chugach Mountains followed by my photos of the Chugach Range from yesterday.
